Default Hobbits are a bunch of stoners

I downloaded and started watching the Hobbit.
Just like the book(s) and LOTR there are many a mention of "Halfling's Leaf" a 9 leafed plant according to the 1st Edition hobbit book I own
    • Hobbits are lazy unless planting crops
    • Gandalf gives Radagast the Proud wizard some of his pipe and he goes abit stoned!
    • There is a line about "halfling's leaf making gandalf lazy"
    • Radagast eats shrooms and has a Riddled brain

J.r.r.Tolkien was an indulger of the Old bush!
    Discuss!

Edit: Also Hobbits indulge in said leaf and consume their own weight in food and Grog

So basically.....we are all hobbits? We are all lazy unless planting our 'crops'. After smoking the crop, we can all eat more then our body weight. Nowwwwww I know why I'm so short :/

Well I have grown up around and always reading the LOTR etc
Got some rare books and stuff created by Tolkien for his sons. I have a few of the lesser known works like the "legends of mordor" and the tails of an old hobbit. Some books only printed in their hundreds not thousands!
In the hobbit he smokes a pipe and starts to dream of the journey...

Tolkien was not a pothead. He was a lifelong dedicated pipe smoker. In LOTR there is a note in the preface to explain that 'Pipe Weed' is of the genus Nicotiana.

Sorry to shatter any illusions but there is definitely no cannabis in any of Tolkien's books.

Having said that, I'd highly recommend "Bored of the Rings" by Henry N. Beard and Douglas C. Kenney. It's hilarious & has many drug references.

Hence the phrase "pipe dreams". Nothing to do with hallucinogens, just the soothing effect of nicotine.

If you read Unfinished tales there is mention of the smoke causing "dreams", although It could be the effect of nicotine
The Two page depiction of "Pipe weed" is rather vivid for being anything less that Sensimelia, (In his biography manuscripts) and it is widely know there is mention of his travels to India and South africa where we all know there are many Land Race's no?

The Wizard Gandalf learned to smoke pipe-weed from the Hobbits. In The Hobbit he turns smoke-rings into different colors, although this might be purely due to the director Ralph Baskhi's style, as many of his other works show both tobacco and cannabis smoke turning different colors. One palpable description of the weed's effects is given by Gandalf to fellow wizard Saruman upon a meeting of the White Council:

You might find that smoke blown out cleared your mind of shadows within. Anyway, it gives patience, to listen to error without anger.

It also says: "...a variety probably of Nicotiana" Which I have just found in the book.

Pipe-weed is Only found in LOTR and Tobacco in the Hobbit. The films however all say "Pipe weed" or "pipe heads" in Bilbo's case of the intrusion at supper.

We may never know.. Although it is thought by some that he May have used Opiates in his earlier life like many at the time.

    I'd say almost certainly not.

Others here will be bound to disagree but I hold fast.

Both Tolkien & CS Lewis were firmly from the Northern European tradition of booze & tobacco. Their works are littered with references to beer, wine, rum, various other spirits & also tobacco. These are always considered to be good or at least, acceptable to the Good Guys. The Heroes are allowed booze & fags.

The Evil ones are where the dubious references occur. In LOTR Orc liquor has a strange speed-like quality. It also numbs. In the Narnia Tales the narcotics are only ever in the hands of the Baddies: the White Witch's Turkish Delight or the 'aromatic herbs' strewn on the fire in The Silver Chair to name but two instances.

Both writers have very conservative views on anything alien to their own accepted culture.

I can't for the life of me think that Tolkien ever smoked Hashish despite 'having been to India'. & even if he did I doubt it had any effect on his subsequent writings.

I often wonder why people can't just accept that sometimes, occasionally very special people come up with incredible things from their own imagination. Doesn't need drugs or stress or anything else. It's just an amazing imagination. Isn't that enough?

This may be true Ganesha my friend. But you must admit, the imagination is far more exaggerated under the influence of drugs.
