    Hi pugz mate,

one thing essential for a graft to take is that it is in complete darkness and when I've experimented with grafting in the past just used micropore tape from the chemists. It's a porous tape used for medical dressings on injuries.

Light inhibits hormone production essential for metabolic processes and so the graft site must be in complete darkness.

Haven't heard of the darkness before, maybe I missed that bit lol.

So is it just the graft in darkness of can I put the whole plant and graft in darkness?

Just over the graft site mate. Darkness promotes a change through hormones of the stem. If you put a seedling deep into it's new pot, as the stem has now been placed in darkness it triggers hormones that enables the cells of the plant stem walls to actually change into root cells and that is triggered by darkness and the same applies with grafting as the plant cells have to actually change ( not just heal together ) in order for the graft to take.

i use black insulating tape always works, but dont use pound shop stuff, good quality tape stays on even outside i graft bonsai and fruit trees in this manner and have had very good sucess.by the way its called etiolation its reason roots grow in the dark.we use insulating tape on a chosen branch about 6 months before air layering and it roots in 6 weeks,on trees any way.

Now you have put it like that it makes even more sense .

I've buried stems before and noticed the roots started to grow out of the what was a stem

Good luck with your next try Pugz.

Interesting what's been said about grafting needs to be done in darkness, the cannabis grafts I've done have been under a minimum of 18/6, using a 125w blue cfl.
