THCtalk 2008 Summer Sunflower competition

We are going to have a THCtalk Summer Sunflower competition.

Because there are some people that simply cannot grow out a huge sunflower because of housing constrictions, there is going to be two competition's in one :joint:

Your welcome to enter both of these comps, and good luck to anybody and everbody who does :)

The first competition is for the 2008 THCtalk tallest sunflower of the year, simply whoever has the tallest Sunflower and supplies a picture with a card/picture with THCtalk somewhere in the photo with your plant, and a fair means of measument wins.

For people who dont have access to a area to join in on the largest sunflower competition, there is a second competition for the brightest or most colourfull, or simply the most beautifull sunflower be it large or small, all sunflowers are allowed as long as it can be seen growing either in the ground or in a pot, with a THCtalk sign in the picture, a vote off will be done for the second part of the competition.

The first competition prize, 10x Mango Haze f2 seeds & 5x Blueberry x NL#5/Haze seeds
The second competition prize will be a prize of 10 x White Princess f1 seeds and 5x Widow x nl#5/haze.

Carnt see you pulling off a 10 foot monster indoors but if its a sunflower whatever size and you have grown it, you can enter either or both ;)

Just thought it wasent fair if we excluded people that have no means of growing a large sunflower, so by having two parts anybody can enter be it a micro sunflower or a world beater

Cheers mate, it was Grims idea really, but its a fun thing any member of the forum can get involved in over the summer.

Just a bit of fun growing some harmless sunflowers, after all there is more than one plant we can enjoy growing :stoned-smilie:

To make it fair for those that live in the more northern parts of the UK, the comp will end on the 30th of September.

Tallest plant wins the first part/prize and a forum vote for nicest sunflower wins the second part/prize.

I started mine over 1 ft growing in a small pot in kitchen .. as long as it has light it can grow very tall inside, just keep the head near the window, I'm sure you can reach 5 / 6 ft indoors.

Awww mate i'm definatly doing this!!! My mum will be well up for it as well. I've already got some nice soil. My garden gets shitloads of light as well.

Probably not going for tallest since there seems to be people here who are already growing sunflowers (respect to the love of horticulture and not just the sacred plant :D) but the beauty of my sunflower will debilitate all of you :D:D:D:D:D:D

It's about 6 weeks old, was in a pot in kitchen window with a sprig of basil ... planted it out a few weeks ago. Something keeps nibbling the leaves off, think its a snail...

I use a ring of copper wire around the base of most of my plants. Copper taken out of electrical cable, plaited, then shaped in to a ring. The slime on slugs and snails reacts with the copper in the same way that salt does.

i went round to my mothers today, asked her if i could plant my sunflower in her garden, at first she was puzzled as in why? but then i explained it and she was happy to let me have some in her garden.
so i put my tallest sunflower in her raised bed.
Whey i can grow tall and small ones now!

If you do this to the base of your sunflower, slugs and snails will leave it alone. ;)

You need some unwanted electrical cable to strip the copper from.

I've got aload of copper tape from the garden center around the bottom of my greenhouse and i've not had any slugs/snails attack anything in there yet(fingers crossed),any copper will do tho like the wire monty bong has done used,another tip is to crush up aload of egg shells on the soil surface around the base of your plants as its like walking on glass and smearing vasaline around the outside of the pot will stop them to as there foot is what they taste with so as soon as they touch it they'll turn back as they can't stand the taste of it.

well i got my seeds the other day and potted myn up it sais on the pack GIANT SINGLE HEADED sounds interesting, i noticed whyll potting the seed that ther was a few different collure ones (white,few stripes, white with loads stripes & black) so i have potted 1 of each to c the differantes,
Did anybody else notice this.

This one was planted about 2 weeks later but I think it will outgrow the other. I planted it right next to compost bin as I read they like moist fertile soil, lots of food. I think the roots have now got beneath the composter, the leaves look so healthy.....

So it does....I just looked it up, my my you learn something new every day.

Either way copper stops plants getting eaten by slugs and snails, as does sandpaper wrapped round the stem. Crushed eggshells work but in my experience easily get washed away during rain or watering, in the same way that salt would.

Slugs or snails are more than likely doing this to your sunflowers. They love them.

Here is an update on how my biggest are coming along.

The one by the compostor is like a triffid. The first pic is it's stem and the second pic is of the triffid plus another that has yet to open, so may get even taller.

Thank you for your comments people, they do mean a lot to me.

I haven't really been posting much since my bust as I feel I don't really have very much to contribute to the forum at the moment, other than the pics of my sunflowers., so thank you again...positive comments make Monty Bong a happy bunny. :D

Plod took my HPS with them when they visited but i've recently been given a 200w blue enviro to get me up and running again and I've traded a few seeds and a spare HPS bulb for a 250w Red enviro that I will be collecting in a few days.

If I'm lucky enough to win I'll keep a diary on the prize seeds, but I will need some help as i've never grown under enviros.

Hope you guys n gals are up for the job...lol

So before this one gets snapped here's my entry. I'm not sure what can be considered a fair means of measurement? To get the whole plant in I have to stand quite far away, so you can't see the tape measure well enough in the pic to see what size it is.

It measures just over 9ft from where it enters the ground to the top of the main flower. The fence behind is a standard 6ft panel to give some idea of scale.

I watched a programme back along about the Leek show's and that is some serious business is that hey mate. People where even chopping others so they wouldn't win so that led to people guarding theres 24 hours a day. :eek:
