Hi..... Having looked at scrogs on this forum i feel i need to give it ago. After looking at one scrog grow in particular i see it as way of growing as little as six plants but getting bigger yield than i would if i was growing many more plants in say a sog method.

So i have been doing some research and picked up some second to none information along the way. This info may already be on here hidden in the archives but for people like myself who couldn't find it i thought i would share it.

I have seen some interest in the scrog and thought i would post this info i have found. It will guarantee a larger harvest off a single plant.

A scrog is a SCREEN OF GREEN one of the most productive and easiest ways to grow indoors. A scrog has been around for many years and before HID's were introduced many used floro's with good results.

What is a scrog ? what is a screen of green ? well it is just that. A screen is the main character of a scrog. It is usually made from wire or something sturdy enough to hold back a growing canopy. This wire should have some holes in it around 2x2inches in size so that the plant matter can easily grow through the wire and be supported by it. The wire is supported between the growth medium and the light at a distance determined by the size of your lamp. The plants grow through the screen about 3-4 inches and then are pulled back under and spread out where YOU want them to grow.

Getting started...... If you have got an grow area where you established plants growing then you are have way there. If you have had head height issues in the past then you can kiss them issues good by!

The screen........ Remember at least 2x2inches squares. You can use chicken wire as well or even some tightly strung rope but i would suggest wire. You need something strong to support the buds and hold back the canopy of growth. The screen needs to be cut to size. The size of the screen is determined by the size of your lamp. Remember to get good bud formation you need at least 50 watts per square foot so your screen size should not exceed that. Check the example below.

150hps screen size 1.75ft x 1.75ft

250hps screen size 2.25ft x 2.25ft

400hps screen size 2.91ft x 2.75ft

600hps screen size 3.45ft x 3.45ft

1000hps screen size 4.4ft x 4.5ft

Now you have got your screen size you need to secure it in place above your plants . Where and what height ? These two questions determine how close you can get your light to the canopy. This is very important and the rule of thumb is the closer the better. If you do not have air cooled lamps then a desk fan blowing in between the canopy and the lamp should do the trick! Here is some examples of screen settings for hps. These are not exact just a baseline idea. Dont worry if you cant get so close, as long as you have the right watts per footage they will produce.

150hps 10-12 inches
250hps 12-15 inches
400hps 16-20 inches
600hps 20 +
1000hps 24 +

Your plants............. How many will i need under the screen ? usually the rule is 1 plant per square foot of screen. You can go for fewer plants . Having less plants is a good thing if they discover your illegal activity. But remember with less plants you will have to veg longer to fill the screen.

Spacing between the medium and the screen is normally 8 inches!!

What is the best strain for a scrog ? Any kind your heart desires! Some strains require more training and that is the only difference. Heavy yield indica's are the easy candidates but with the correct training the sativa will really shine.

Hydro or soil......... Hydro any day! Why ? Bigger yields and with soil it is hard to water and flush. You can go with soil and it will still produce more than any normal soil grow will but you must employ some kind of removable draining tray into your set up.

Vegging........... The big mistakes are flipping 12/12 to quick and not filling the screen up or flipping to late and have to much mess which defeats the purpose of a scrog. The general rule is flip 12/12 when 70% of the screen is full. But try to no your strain and how much it stretches to determine how much growth you will have after you flip 12/12.

Pulling it back through........... You should have 3-4 inches coming through the screen and reach under pulling it back through the screen and if need be tie with plastic twisty ties. You could get really technical and make sure they is a node at every hole but that really does not matter, just get the growth under the screen first. In the later stages you will see were to guide the growth.

Training.......... Scrog is not natural growth for the cannabis plant. It must stress the shit out of them the whole cycle of life. Imagine taking a plant that usually grows anywhere from 3ft - 12ft and making it grow in a space no larger than 2 foot. Training begins in the pulling back through section. Try to situate your main branches to the barest part of the screen. They will branch out the most and usually be the largest bud in the bunch. Use some kind of uniformity to your laying out the branches . crisscross / zigzag whatever you use. Lesser buds are now exposed to more light and are encouraged to grow upwards towards the screen through some leaf trimming.

Leaf trimming.......... In the latter stages all the leaf below the screen will of been removed.

Clones or seeds.............. Clones if you can. Why ? With clones you usually already no the characteristics of the plant and how it will perform. Also you dont want to be untangling a male or a hermie from the screen.

Even canopy.............. Your canopy does not have to perfectly even. Just close. The idea behind this is even light distribution . We are looking for a field of buds not a forest like a sog. Diamond reflectors play a part in this!

Hope this helps the would be scroggers like it has me.

yer good read ty. After my 12/12 experimental grow I think i am going to try a scrog grow for the obvious benefits.

Cheers for the reply. Yeah the scrog is the way forward for me. We all want less plants and more smoke but the main thing for me is head height in my grow room is not high enough and the scrog fixes that problem. Is head height an issue for you Teutonic ? Im guessing that is why you are do a 12/12 experiment to keep the plants shorter ? ...............Cheers h84the10s hope this info has helped, lol bring it on!!

I am having a sorta try at SCROG in my greenhouse with a Mastodon Kush.
My sceen had holes about 4" though. Should be okay for a go though.
