Hey,

I'm a 19 year old male; I've been smoking for a couple of years now. Yesterday I had a smoke for the first time in a few days and I would like to share my bad experience in hope for advice/similar stories.

During the first hour after initially consuming one relatively small joint everything was fine and dandy however, I then began to experience something horrible, which came out of nowhere! My heart began making what can only be described as heavy palpitations. There was no actual physical pain accompanied but major discomfort around my chest/heart area, everything felt very weak as if my heart wasn't pumping blood around my body properly. Every few seconds/minutes this would come and go (sometimes really apparent) it felt like the beginning of what I can only presume a heart attack would be like. I began shaking and found it particularly difficult to breathe properly after even the slightest movement, at one point I was freezing cold and felt close to death.

I resided to bed although the symptoms continued for several hours until they began to subside but even today the morning after my heart/chest area still feels tight but the palpitations have stopped. I'm on antidepressants for anxiety and depression, I'm medically healthy otherwise. A similar thing happened in Amsterdam just over a year ago after a day of excessive use but on this occasion I only smoked a single joint. Any idea what I was experiencing? I was seconds away from calling an ambulance but decided otherwise after I told myself it was only a panic attack although, I was on my own at the time and the symptoms came out of now where.

Thanks for listening and I would appreciate any feedback, I’m seeing the doctor today for a routine check-up so I’ll be sure to discuss it then. I don’t know how to distinguish my symptoms from a panic attack (only had one once before) and something more sinister.

Daniel

Thats a bit scary!

Do you drink much coffee/caffeine?

The reason I ask is it sounds similar to when I drink way too much caffeine and it sends my heart racing and feels like it's
Skipping beats!!! Very scary!!!

Could it be the medication your on or combination of meds/weed?

I just don't think weed on it's own could do that to someone?!?!

Hope your ok though dude.

A few cups a day nothing over the top through, the last cup I had prior to my experience was in the morning. My attack happened late evening. I'm seeing the doc today but my worry is even today the morning after, my heart area still feels tight.

Sounds like you had a whitey, and as you have form for anxiety and depression you are now just worrying way too much about it and making yourself worse.

Was the weed you smoked your own grow/from impeccable source or from the local bag man. If it's chopped early from the bag man then you've an increased likelihood of whiteys by smoking immature weed.

Defo a whitey mate. I used to be famous for them amongst my smoking buddies.
About a year ago I quit weed because I was feeling 'weird' at all sorts of times in the day, loss of balance, feeling dizzy too. Turns out I had Labyrinthitous !
Had some pills for a month which got rid of it. Glad it wasn't the weed, but stayed on solids for about 3 months just to be sure.

When I went to bed last night, for a few minutes I could feel me heart pounding, felt panicky, and thought I had a whitey approaching off the WW. Then I remembered
having a late evening coffee, and that fucker set me off. Normally I reach for the 'decaff' jar if having coffee at night, slipped up and paid the price. Not that it helps you op, just thought i'd mention

I have been in a similar situation many times but this was due to being hungover and then smoking bongs, probably had alcohol withdrawal at the same time, came close to calling ambulance but it does go away after a while, caffeine and street weed has also done this to me on a few occasions, I just ignore it as par for the course really
after all weed is a psychotropic substance so it's not always going to be fun

Heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and severe panic are just your body reacting to passing from being kinda stoned to being totally fucked.

Gotta relax and pass through.

It can be exacerbated by certain medications, but no one's ever died smoking weed.

There's a writeup on how to pass through the whitey stage here: Let me get you to [8] or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the bong. (http://www.reddit.com/r/saplings/comments/hqr20/let_me_get_you_to_8_or_how_i_learned_to_stop/)

Or you can just keep believing weed's going to give you a heart attack, your choice.

I wish I knew this shit 20 years ago, but them's the breaks.

easy to stay steve...i should not smoke really as stuff happens, but since smoking grass its not so bad and when i dont smoke street weed im even better so i cant wait for my batch to finish...my nephew has one of my first soil plants going so it waill not be long untill we both finish smoking street weed and save some dosh.

ive search everywhere to find legal highs that give the same effect as smoke but to no joy...i think i have a mild version of adhd ...looking back on my childhood and school reports confirm it all lol ..i have never thought that i was ever a proplem at school but looking back at it a pattern sticks out and i once had a leaving card at a place i used to work and it said from one fellow worker " i hope your new job goes well you reckless fucker" i couldnt of said it better lol

so when i have a smoke i like the "turned off" feeling where i dont have to think as my mind normal with out it spins like a fruit machine lol so going back to my point is some people cant give up because it "chills me down brother" lol

Sounds like you had a decent caring upbringing then, obvously not down to that.

Probably down to the overactive mind and not being challenged enough at school, i blame this for my poor attendance.... if school was interesting, like taught you stuff that's important unlike algebra.... I think i would of been more interested etc.

I find myself learning more from internet lectures, then i EVER did at school. :)

but on the other side of the coin i think the internet and computer are used too much...accounts being hacked in and nothing is safe with hackers getting your info coz the companys security is shit etc etc..i dont blame them for hignlighting it just dont share my info lol

Aye mate, children do use computers way too much, but the main problem is, using it too much for the wrong reasons.

If you're on the computer 24/7 and educating yourself on things, you're always learning always sucking up new info... if you're just sat on facebook... playing games on miniclip... it can't be healthy.
As you said, it's totally unlimited info at your fingertips, any question to any answer EVER. if it's known, you can find it.
The problem is, most people are totally overwhelmed with choice, and go for the easiest thing to process... celebrity gossip and shit like that.

My old man is a classic example, he's like i know how to use it a little bit, but i need you to teach me, so i say here's google... if you need to know ANYTHING just type it in... and boom it will tell you anythign you ever needed to know, oh right! he says... ten minutes later he's sat looking at porn. because he's overwhelmed by choice, and doesn't know enough in his own mind, to choose something interesting apart from porn. Plus he's a dirty cunt, that might also have something to do with it.

Nearly all drugs accentuate the moods and feelings you naturally have in this case i think the weed is taking your anxiety levels to far i am speaking from my own experience here and i have found different strains are worse than others. If i have a lot on my mind (issues that are bothering me) i find it's best to smoke solid or smoke big bud in smaller spliff worth's than usual. Hope this helps mate i know exactly what your going through and it's not nice at all. Experiment with different amounts and different strains and if all that fails the best thing to do is give weed a wide berth for 6 months and see it it persists when you try again if so then maybe maybe the unthinkable is your only option (giving up altogether) Ive known people who haven't respected paranoia and anxiety and by the time they give up they are not the same person they where before.
Again i hope this helps mate and Good Luck

(apologies if I've posted in the wrong thread)

Alright, Daniel.

I dont know what happened, but it must have been a panic attack, most of the times people start panicking when something like the heart pumping stronger or faster begins to happen after a one or two hits in a bong/joint.

You started thinking that you could have died, that's more than enought to prove that you did panic and alot. You started shaking due to the panic, dont take anti-depressives, that's what's killing you. One of the worst drugs out there..those pills should be forbidden without any medical advice to take 'em.

Anyway, calm down and stop smoking for a while, dont stress up mate! If you think that the best way to solve this problem is stopping smoking, then I think that you should. If you gonna stop smoking for a while, but if you smoke again being afraid of something that can happen, then Im sure that you will attract bad energies into you.

Chill, nothing will happen to ya.

I wish you all the best!

-Tiago.

I am a Nurse so I will venture a guess at a diagnosis, but will preface this by saying only a real Doctor can diagnose. Too many unknown factors such as your cardiac status ect, but here it goes...When one consumes marijuana, the blood vessels dialate suddenly. This can cause a quick drop in blood pressure and give all the symptoms that you described. When a person's blood pressure drops suddenly or bottoms out as we call it, it causes symptoms that may seem similar to an anxiety attack or heat stroke. My advise is to consult a real doctor and perhaps get a bllod pressure device and start taking your blood pressure before, during, and after use. Keep a diary on your pressures and give that to your doctor. There are ways to stabilize this if done properly.

Hey dude,
I've never had an experience like that before, although once at university I od'd on space cakes. After the japan disasters I few of my stoner mates thought it would be a good idea to raise money for the cause, by selling hash brownies at a house party we were going to later that eve. Anyhow he must of underestimated how much he put in. 2hours after I indulged I was at a state where I was so stoned I couldn't even communicate to people. End up listening to bob Marley All night.
