ITN - Wednesday, October 1 11:59 am

An unemployed German man found an envelope containing 16,000 euros (£12,700) in cash and jewellery on a road - and handed it to police.

The 56-year-old father of a disabled son, whose family relies on 600 euros (£476) of state benefits per month, spotted the package while cycling along a busy road near Ermstedt in the eastern state of Thuringia.

Thomas Liedtke, a builder, was quoted as saying: "The money would have been like a gift from heaven for me.

"It would have come in handy for the heating bill. But my conscience got the better of me. It was a hard decision to go to the police."

A police spokesman said the origins of the money are not known.

He said no one had reported missing the wad of rolled-up of 500 euro notes and jewellery, which included a ring, medallion, necklaces and ear rings

When i was about 12 I saw a woman standing over a wallet in the middle of the road, I went over to 'assist' her and together we opened it, inside was £40 and a i.d. card with the wallets owner address. I told the woman that I was passing this house on my home and would be happy to return it to its owner. Woohoo me and 2 mates skipped school the next day and went to Southend and spent it all in the arcades. £40 was a lot of money to a 12 year old kid in 1987.

I must add that I once found a wallet in a niteclub and handed it in, so that kind of equals it out. lol

I lost my wallet in Bristol the other week and someone handed it in with the cash in.

Put a proper smile on my face, I'll be paying that forward if I get the chance.

I'd hand a wallet in if I found it because I know how annoying it is to loose cards etc. If it was just an envelope of cash I would keep it without a doubt.

aww bless him, don;t you get it if it remains unclaimed anyway after so many days/weeks? as a "finders keepers" typre rule?

I find things all the time ;) I usually hand em in though cos am a good lass... and I know how much it sucks to lose stuff :(
