Recommended first kit

I plan to start my first ever grow but im not sure what kit to buy, i plan on using soil and would start with 3 plants what exactly do i need and wheres the cheapest place to get it, thanks

What kind of space have you got available ? What kind of budget have you got ?

Answering those kinds of questions will determine if you can get something a bit bigger, or if you need to stay on the smaller side.

I have around £300 to spend on everything tent fans lights seeds etc, space is not a problem im gonna use my garage

I guess the next question is if you're going to go DIY or are you going to buy stuff in ?

If you're just buying stuff then you'll need a grow tent, an appropriate light, one or maybe two extraction fans (one for intake), a carbon filter, and other bits and pieces.

Have a quick look at my first grow diary to give you some idea of kit. If I had more space though, I wouldn't have gone the CFL route, so bear that in mind (meaning you need better extraction to control temps).

and remember that its coming upto winter and garage tempretures will be down very low at this time of year, so may need a heater as the plants will not be chuffed at garage temps

Good call, a large (depending on the tent size obviously!) tubular heater should do the job...

A 1.2x1.2x2.0m tent would cover your needs with a 400w hps dual spectrum will see you through. And either a 4 or 5' ruck fan with rhino filter. that would do nicely

Also need to think if you're doing a soil grow or hydro, most people start off with a soil grow as it tends to be more forgiving.

I'd say that a 600 Watt HPS would be the minimum for that sort of size (88,100 lumens, 61,000 Lm/m²), and that a 1,000 Watt lamp wouldn't be out of place (130,000 lumens, 90,300 Lm/m²).

Two at 400 Watts might give better coverage than a single 1,000 Watt lamp, but would have slightly lower output (111,000 lumens vs. 130,000). Still very acceptable though.

If you want the simplest option for a grow and to keep costs & heat down...

Tent - 1M * 1M * 2M + 400W dual spectrum HPS lamp with decent reflector + 5" carbon filter + 5" inline fan + enough 5" ducting to connect them together.

4 * 11 Litre pots + 1M square tray + bag of perlite + bag of compost with JI #1 + tommorite plant food.

Timer, contactor, clip on fan, temp/humiditiy meter.

Then get some decent auto flowering feminised seeds, germinate them using the paper towel method, transplant into the 11 litre pots filled with a ratio of 75% compost 25% perlite mixed together.

Set the timer for the lights to 18 hours on, 6 off (so off is in the afternoon - warmest part of day), fan to run constantly - water as needed, feed as needed and in 70 days you'll have your very own weed!

The clip on fan is for air circulation to keep plants strong and healthy, the contactor is so the HPS wont burn out your timer with the switch-on surge.

You could go for a 1.2*1.2*2.0 tent with a 600W dual spectrum but then I'd be tempted to put 9 plants in it if growing auto's.

As for where to get it - Greens & Kitbag have seen me OK, the THCT shop have a nice choice of seeds.

I've looked at the CFL kit in a few places and would be ideal for myself, major off putting bit for me is the quality of the contents of the kit as I've heard more bad than good.
