    Default Everything about Swine Flu

Mexican authorities have closed schools and public buildings in the capital in a bid to contain a new flu virus suspected of killing up to 60 people.

Public events were suspended and residents donned face masks as concern grew over the outbreak.

Health experts say tests so far seem to link it with a new swine flu virus that sickened eight in the southern US.

US experts said they were taking the virus seriously and working to learn as much as possible about it.

But both the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) said that there was no need at this point to issue travel advisories for parts of Mexico or the US.

In Geneva, the WHO said an emergency committee would likely convene over the weekend. It said it had prepared "rapid containment measures" in case they were needed.

"We are very, very concerned," said WHO spokesman Thomas Abraham.

"We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human. It's all hands on deck at the moment."

In the US, the White House said it was monitoring events.

    US links

Mexican Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova speaks in Mexico City (24/04/2009)
Mr Cordova said the virus has so far responded to anti-viral drugs

Mexican authorities suspect the virus may have been involved in the deaths of about 60 people, mostly in and around Mexico City, since mid-March.

Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova said that 20 of those deaths were confirmed to be from the new swine flu strain and the rest were being analysed.

More than 900 other people are thought to have been infected.

Mr Cordova said antiviral drugs had so far proved to be effective in combating the illness and the WHO had not yet advised starting developing a vaccination programme.

The BBC's Stephen Gibbs in Mexico City says the authorities have obtained a million doses of such treatment and are distributing them to hospitals across the country.

Officials said most of those killed so far were young adults - rather than more vulnerable children and the elderly.

On Friday, Mexican President Felipe Calderon cancelled a trip and convened his cabinet to coordinate a response.

Masks were being handed out to residents and reports said the streets were far quieter than usual.

    Concern growing

Dr Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC, said that preliminary tests on seven out of 14 samples from patients in Mexico had matched the virus found in the US.

Eight people have fallen sick - six in California and two in Texas - with a virus that experts say is a new strain of swine flu. All eight have recovered and only one was hospitalised.

    Q&A: Swine flu

Dr Besser said more information was needed to determine the extent of the threat posed by the virus but that "concern has grown" since Thursday as more information has come to light.

He said it was not yet known whether swine flu would lead to a major pandemic but that scientists around the world were monitoring developments and taking the threat seriously.

"At the early stages of an outbreak there is much uncertainty and probably more than everyone would like. Our guidelines and advice are likely to be interim and fluid and subject to change as we learn more," he said.

Both the CDC and the WHO say they plan to send experts to Mexico to help investigate the virus.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease which infects pigs. It does not normally infect humans, although sporadic cases do occur usually in people who have had close contact with pigs.

There have also been rare documented cases of humans passing the infection to other humans.

Such cases are monitored very closely because of fears that a new strain of swine flu with the ability to pass from person to person could spark a pandemic.

Yup. Or if that fails why not just inject people with flu instead..

"Baxter International, a company that prepares and distributes flu vaccines, was caught attempting to ship to some 16 countries, vaccines that had been mixed with the live avian flu virus, which would have caused a pandemic. Researchers say that it was impossible for this to have happened accidentally."

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3cTCQoZMJs"]YouTube - SWINE FLU NATURAL OR MAN-MADE[/ame]

Infection control experts are looking into reports of deaths from an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.

    What is swine flu?

Swine flu is a respiratory disease which infects pigs.

Caused by influenza type A, there are regular outbreaks among herds of pigs, where the disease causes high levels of illness but is rarely fatal.

It tends to spread in autumn and winter but can circulate all year round.

There are many different types of swine flu and like human flu, the infection is constantly changing.

    Can humans catch swine flu?

Swine flu does not normally infect humans, although sporadic cases do occur usually in people who have had close contact with pigs.

There have also been rare documented cases of humans passing the infection to other humans.

Human to human transmission of swine flu thought to spread in the same way as seasonal flu - through coughing and sneezing.

Is this a new type of swine flu?

The World Health Organization has confirmed at least some of the cases are a never-before-seen strain of H1N1.

It is genetically different from the fully human H1N1 seasonal influenza virus that has been circulating globally for the past few years and contains DNA that is typical to avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses

How many cases are there in the latest outbreak?

The Mexican government has confirmed 16 deaths from a swine flu outbreak and they are investigating 50 further possible deaths

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention is also investigating seven non-fatal cases of human transmission of swine flu that have been reported since March 2009 but there has been no confirmation of a link.

    How worried should people be?

When any new strain of flu emerges that acquires the ability to pass from person to person, it is monitored very closely in case it has the potential to spark a pandemic.

The World Health Organization is concerned but says it is too soon to change the threat level warning for a pandemic.

The UK Health Protection Agency said it was keeping a close eye on the situation involving human cases of swine influenza in case of any threat to people in this country.
More than 60 people in Mexico have died from pneumonia after contracting a flu-like virus.
According to the World Health Organisation some tested positive for a strain that made at least seven in the south-western US sick.
WHO director-general Margaret Chan said the outbreak involved "an animal strain of the H1N1 virus, and it has pandemic potential" although it was too early to say whether a pandemic would actually occur.
The global health body has advised countries around the world to look out for similar outbreaks following the discovery of related strains on both sides of the Mexico-US border.
The HPA said: "No cases of swine flu have been identified in the UK or anywhere in Europe. The reported events in the US and Mexico are unusual and warrant further investigation and vigilance on the part of other countries. More investigation and testing is needed to determine the severity of the disease and the ease with which it can spread.
"The HPA is monitoring this situation closely and is working with the UK government to review the current incident and any threat it poses to UK public health."
There was currently a "very low level" of flu activity in the UK, according to the HPA, which added that H1N1 was treatable with antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu and Relenza.
Britons are not currently being advised to avoid travelling to affected areas of Mexico and the US, although anyone visiting those destinations or who has recently returned should consult a doctor if they experience flu-like symptoms.

The Mexican authorities say 81 people are now thought to have been killed by an outbreak of a human swine flu virus.

Public buildings have been closed, large events cancelled and people told to stay at home in an attempt to prevent the spread of infection.

The World Health Organization has said the virus could become a pandemic and is a matter of "international concern."

Several people have also fallen ill in the United States, but there have been no reported fatalities.

Hundreds of public events have been suspended in Mexico and schools in and around the capital, Mexico City, have been closed until 6 May.

Museums and libraries have also been closed and people are being urged to avoid shaking hands or sharing crockery.

Mexico's Health Secretary, Jose Cordova, said a total of 1,324 people had been admitted to hospital with suspected symptoms since 13 April and were being tested for the virus.

"In that same period, 81 deaths were recorded probably linked to the virus but only in 20 cases we have the laboratory tests to confirm it," he said.

Mexico's President Felipe Calderon has announced emergency powers to deal with the situation.

He said he had published a decree through which the government "assumes the faculties and the attributions given by the constitution to the president in case of emergency, like the one we are seeing now".

The measures give the authorities the powers to isolate individuals suspected of having the virus and inspect their homes.

Mr Calderon said Mexico was facing "something unknown" but that the authorities had "large supplies" of the relevant medication.

    'International concern'

In the US, 11 people are now confirmed to have been infected with the new strain - seven people in California, two in Texas, and two in Kansas.

    UK monitoring flu outbreak

Eight suspected cases are being investigated at a New York City high school where about 200 students fell mildly ill with flu-like symptoms.

City health commissioner Dr Thomas Frieden said preliminary tests of the specimens showed they were possible cases of swine flu.

Further tests will clarify if it was the same strain that detected in the other three states.

Dr Frieden urged people to maintain basic hygiene, such as covering their mouths when coughing and sneezing, washing hands regularly and keeping surfaces clean.

Following a meeting of its emergency committee on Saturday, the WHO said the virus had the potential to become a pandemic but it was too early to say whether that would happen.

WHO Director General Margaret Chan said recent events constituted "a public health emergency of international concern" and that countries needed to cooperate in heightening surveillance.

The WHO has set a worldwide pandemic alert of level three, meaning a new virus has been confirmed but there is no or limited evidence of human to human transmission.....

This morning they are reporting that it might now be a global worry but we shouldnt be panicking yet so that means that we should or does it,fuck im confused & iv no skins & the shops dont open until 9am here on a Sunday.
