No, the bulb isnt likely to have been designed with dimming in mind. That's based on me never seeing a street lamp dimmed!

Presumably it'll damage the bulb over time; by how much and how quickly though, I've no idea. Nor am I that bothered at ~£20 a bulb

That's pretty dangerous ! Glass hand grenade comes to mind ! You should use the correct bulb with the ballast ie 1000 watt ballast should only have 1000 watt bulbs used and dimmed if preferred ,but never put ,say a 600 watt bulb in a 1000watt ballast and dim it down to 600 watts as it will explode ! And possibly burn the house down or cause serious damage to anyone that's unlucky enough to be near it when it explodes .

It would be different if I was trying to pull more watts through a Smaller Ballast Meaning I wouldn't stick a 600w Bulb in a 400w Ballast Thats Asking for Trouble,

If a 600bulb is in a 400 ballast wouldn't it be less bright and dim? Less energy passing threw the element?
And a 400wbulb in a 600 ballast would be bad cause 50% more energy is passing threw the element that it needs??
Or am I missing something here?

You are wasting energy and light spectrum but I know sunmaster bulbs are designed to reduce this loss when dimmed, not sure about osram or grolux lamps.

the manufactuer makes the lights to give off there full spectrum of light at there predetumined wattage so a 600w produces its full spectrum of light at 600w by underpowering the lights you there fore are not reaching the full potential of the spectrum of light you can produce which your plants need. i plan on getting a dimmerable ballast and for this reason i will have all the diffrent watt bulbs i need so as my plants constantly the full spectrum of light avalible to them(250w mh for veg and a 250hps and 400w hps for flowering in case any one is intrested). its not as if bulbs are over priced as people have said all you do by under powering is waste money as your light is not running at its full potential.

Less current (running a 600w at 400w) isn't likely to have negative effects with regards to bulb life. In fact I'd hazard a guess that it would last longer ...
