Default Voyager Probes - NOT as boring as it sounds :P

Well I was just looking at the news and its come to light that Voyager 1 has left the solar system.

    Huzzah!

Anyways they had this little graphic up, you put your speed in and it charts the history of the probe on its travels and how long it would take you to get there.

I found it a bit humbling to know that flying at top speed on concord (1,354mph give or take a little) would take a surprisingly long time to reach Jupiter - I wont say more than that as I dont want to spoil the surprise but give it a go. The highest speed limit in your country would also be good - really puts things in perspective. There are stats at the end that are very interesting.

All on 70's tech haha. Hope someone else enjoys it.

A wonderful piece of machinery. A great achievment for the whole team. They are switching things off and on to conserve as much battery as is possible and the last broadcast from them is expected in 2019.

    Fabulous it is.

It says on the Nasa app that voyager will take 40'000 years to reach another star, its hard to imagine the sheer scale of the distance between stars

Yeah that was what got me. If you jumped on your magical horse? and rode it at 100mph into space in the year 50AD your long dead corpse would just about be at Uranus today in the year 2013.

Then consider that they have created a probe and accelerated it 11 miles per second and its left the solar system in 36 years all on 70's tech and its a bloody big feat - that led me on to 40,000 years to reach the nearest star? Fuck... Guess we are on this rock for a while longer.

Uranus will be renamed in 2045, because it will be deemed too rude. It will be called Urectum.
