Fantastic post, Bud. Youve made it look simple enough for me to attempt so I'll be having a go in due course. Nice one fella

Knocked this up last night from spare buttons and bits of string ;-)
Thanks Bud for all the info, the diagrams especially were invaluable.
As you can see, i mounted a double gang socket on the enclosure instead of using a trailing socket, the only reason for this is, the box I originally bought was too small, and this was the next size up that they had in stock, and the relay i'm using isn't the micro type, it's standard size on a din rail mounting (circular pin orientation) and wired slightly different than the micro relay, which is why the diagrams were so handy ;-)
I may add an iphone dock and some powered speakers at a later date haha

Nice piece of kit, Bud
If anyone's wanting to build one, this place seems to be a considerably cheaper source for the auto-transformers (£26.60 + VAT + delivery = £42.40 for one, or £24.70 each + VAT + delivery = £74.28 for two): http://www.ete.co.uk/open-type-singl...unted_1ph.html
And I'm just wondering... Is the relay necessary? The ATC appears to have the same rating.

The relay isolates the two variacs as they switch from one to the other and back again. Variac 1 low speed fan setting Variac 2 high speed fan setting.
As you know you can't power both at the same time connected to a single load. The ATC is just the trigger for the relay.

Nice find Missy :-) I bought mine from wattbits at around £47 each if I remember
The atc was around £27 (from the bay of E)
Enclosure £17 (I think, I returned my original and paid extra for a larger one (local electrical factors))
Relay £5.99 (maplin) holder under a fiver
All prices estimated ;-)
I recon by using these cheaper variac's you could probably make this for under £100?
at a guess £150ish, I can make up a proper price list if you'd like Humph?

Yep, connecting the outputs together would probably be interesting
But surely the heating and cooling lines on the ATC couldn't be active at the same time?
I was thinking of switching only the auto transformer outputs, something like this:The relay's probably safer thoughCode:L --------------------- | | ----- ----- C A E -> ATC1 C A E -> ATC3 ----- ----- | | N ----------------------- Then connect ATC2 and ATC4 together, and to the fan.
