Cool The First Three Weeks of Life - using Household CFL's and Soil.

I've put this up to provide a reference for new growers to show the plants development in their first few weeks of life and what to expect when taking the plunge and growing from seed

For these seedlings I used :

    1. Jiffy#7 peat pellet for first week until roots were popping out of the bottom/side.
    2. JI#1 Seedling/Cutting compost on first pot up for the second/third week.
    3. JI#2 General Purpose Compost when potted up on the third Week.

All these plants have been grown using muck & water under 2x23watts of Daylight Spec CFLs. Nutes are not needed for the first week regardless of grow method. None of these plants have been fed anything other that plain water except for the 24hr seed soak when I do add a drop or two of seaweed extract for the added growth hormones it provides.

    Day0 - 24hr Seed Soak.
After 24hrs the seeds have sunk and cracked open, revealing the first root tip.

    Day 4 - Surfaced.
As soon as the seeds had cracked after their soak they were put into jiffy7 peat pots. These jiffy's are soaked in plain water which is then gently squeezed to remove excess liquid leaving the pellets moistened only. Usually up and growing within 3 days. These two are both the same age, but one has stretched a bit due to being too far way from the light. Nothing to fuss about though, just bury them deeper when potting up.

Day8 - Potted into Seedling pots
A week after putting the seeds into the Jiffys they had spread out their first single leafs and were potted up into a 3"Sq seedling pot.

Day 14 - Starting to Grow and coming out of seedling stage.
A week later when they have roots down and their first 3 fingered leafs as pictured below they were potted up again into 6" pots.

Day 21 - Potted on and vegging.
This has been in the pot a week, has settled in and is now in proper vegetative state.

    Comparison Pictures
Some pics showing the plants at week 1, 2 and 3. These plants are actually 8, 15 and 24 days from soaking. The largest can safely be put under larger/more intense growing lights now, and will take it in their stride, but would need potting up again into a 6-8l pot within a week or so.

I hope this helps to clear up any worries you may have about where your plants should be at the early stages in growth

Polymer crystals hold water and gradually release it as the soil dries out. Polymer crystals cut watering frequency dramatically. To prepare an outdoor garden, remove the weeds in the fall, dig planting holes and prepare the soil. The soil will absorb rainfall and be well mixed the next spring. Cover each planting hole with a layer of mulch to protect it from winter rains and temperatures. This layer of mulch is very important. Do not leave soil bare all winter.

No spraying, you want the roots to search for water an they won't so much if they are folier feeding, sucking moisture thru the leaves.
With seedlings you should have a dome over them and spray the dome for humidity reasons.

What does " prepare the soil " mean ? How will the rainfall mix the soil ? How will the soil absorb rainfall with the mulch on top protecting if from the winter rains ? How will the mulch protect from temperatures ? What is the harm in leaving soil bare all winter ?
