I know this is way too late but even if you think goods you buy might be stolen and they aren't you can still be prosecuted. The offence is attempting to handle stolen goods. It is what is known as an inchoate offence, an offence which is incomplete due to impossibility but is an offence nonetheless. Weird and hard to believe but still true.

Wrong you can be prosecuted even if you think the goods were stolen even if it turns out they were not. It is the offence of attempting to handle stolen goods an inchoate offence. Incidentally handling is considered a more serious offence and carries a potential sentence of 14 years while theft has a maximum of 7 years. Interesting isn't it.
