Default CF ECO STICK Nutrient meter. Faulty or not?

    Hi guys,

Ive recently got a EC Meter / PPM meter, its a CF ECO STICK(truncheon)(tech spec below)

Problem 1 is, i did a test on plain tap water and nothing. No leds nothing(is this normal?) I added salt to the water to see if the device actually did anything and it gave me a reading.
Problem 2, i got 1 litre of plain tap water, and added the appropriate mix per litre of sensi grow A (2.4ml per Ltr) and sensi grow B (2.4ml per Ltr), I then did a reading of the water, I was getting a reading of 0.4 - 0.6 (280 - 420ppm on the truncheon), according to the bottle i should be getting 800ppm from the amount of food i added.

Am I missing something, or is my plant food out of date, i bought it a few years ago but never opened. Thanks T

    Technical Specifications:

    Range: 4-52CF
    0.4-5.2EC
    280-3640ppm (EC x 700)
    200-2600ppm (EC x 500)
    Accuracy ± 4% of reading
    Temperature compensation: automatic
    Operating temperature: 0-50 °C (32-122°F)
    Calibration: factory calibrated
    Power source: 3 x 1.5V(AA batteries)
Auto sense: auto on & auto off

I've got one of those (and so has OXY), nice piece of kit at a nice price

A 0.0 EC is unusual but not impossible (we have a member in Scotland whose tap water is 0.0), do you have any other way to test it?

Northwest, so maybe? Does that explain the plan food reading?

I'll leave that one to someone that knows more than me about it.

I got my meter in the summer to use when I shift over to coco next year, I've had a play with chillies in coco over the summer but that hardly makes me an expert

    Yeah makes sense to me.....

Water hardness in the North West

The majority of raw water in the United
Utilities region comes from upland surface
    water reservoirs.
The water in the reservoirs has little chance of
passing through rocks and to dissolve the
minerals that make water hard. Therefore, the
majority of water in this region is soft or very
soft. We supply water from a number of
boreholes in the south of the region that are
reasonably hard, but these tend to be blended
with softer sources to meet demand. No water
supply in the North West is artificially softened.

    Regards BL

Im in the northwest in the midrange blue. I grow in soil so not needed pens and dont see the point of using coco as the slight extra yield doesnt justify the risk of probs for me. However I know some east lancs such as burnley is in the soft green - if i was there id pick up soft water dutch pro a&b. Buds map should answer ya question mate. My tip tho is if its ya first grow is grow in soil. Get a uk soil and either vitalink or dutch pro nutes - i swear by dp its so simple its untrue. Good luck mate.
