Default First grow shopping list - Is my kit right/suitable for needs? complete noob

Hey again, long time no visit to the site.

Right, so I'll cut straight to it. Live in North UK, so pretty cold at moment (around 1C outside on and off). Our house has a garage connected to house, with our main bedroom above the garage. At the moment, the garage is freezing, as drafty gaps etc....but this week I am going to get that a basic partition wall put up, which will eliminate most of that, and maybe also add some celotex insulation to the walls too.

Anyways, I have been thinking about doing this for some time now, its just been the motivation to get the garage ready for doing it. I haven't smoked for many years but want to know, for personal consumption. Growing a small bit will last me ages, more of a couple on weekend type of guy.....so grow, store, wait several months before need to again...repeat

I've never grown anything ever (unless you count one of those potato grass head things back in the school days)....so its all extremely confusing head first territory for me, and struggling with some of the terminology . Thinking I'd like to start with 2 or 3 plants...maybe stick a couple of chillies in there too if room. I have no idea what I smoked in my youth, back then, a joint was just 'a joint' to me so dont know what to start on.....autoflowering for ease, or try and do the 'good stuff' from the start

no idea on what light patterns yet, but presumably will have it running in the night, with backup radiators to try and keep heat regulated in the garage. Here's roughly what I plan on buying... (although torn between a few items).....No doubt I have also forgot several things so far. I'd like to try and make sure I've bought the right things from the start

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to the various places getting the items from, so won't for now.

    • Black Orchid 120x120x200 tent
    • HID Lighting 600w Dimmable Lumatek/Icarus HPS System ( OR 600w Lumatek Digital Dimmable & Adjust-A-Wing Light System w/ Sylvania Grolux HPS (any recommendations on best canopy?)
    • 6" Fan & Filter Kit RVK 150A / Rhino Pro 150/600 ( OR Fan & Filter Kit RVK-L/Rhino Pro 150/600)
    • Perhaps if necessary some sort of adjustable thermostat fan speed control to help control the speed of it so its not full blast all the time. No idea what model....I noticed Rhino do their own model though
    • Acoustic Fan Ducting (assume 5m will be enough).
    • Air Pots (no idea on sizes needed yet)
    • Digital Thermo-Hygrometer
    • Biobizz Bio-Bloom
    • Biobizz Bio-Grow
    • BioBizz Light Mix (or All Mix - have seen mixed reports - think should either buy both (if the stuff keeps well in storage) or buy Light Mix for while seeds, then just have to add more nutes earlier on to it)
    • Oil filled radiator to keep temps up at night

    1. Is there any other crucial things I'm missing from there?
    2. Any pointers with any of those items as to which would be best to go for? Think the size might be too big? Spending too much perhaps for what will be very small and infrequent grows? Might be best with a 400w instead to control temps better? etc
    3. I'm concerned about my bedroom being above the garage, just how loud these extraction fans are....will I likely be hearing them in the bedroom. If it will be significant then it might be over before its began as the missus would not be pleased
    4. Are water crystals worth using in the soil to help retain water? (have plenty of these from using to feed some feeder bugs for a reptile used to have)
    5. Living in a hard water area, is taper water quality likely to be an issue and kill everything from the start.
    6. Acoustic fan ducting......as this looks to be insulated....does that mean if I buy 6" ducting, it will actually be thicker than 6" (thinking of how it attaches/if holes are big enough for going through tent or whatever.
    7. Is it good to start seedlings off in airpots too, or just in regular pots then move them?
    8. Presumably, the air coming out of this, being warm, could actually be beneficial in a way, ie by sending it out the back into a cold conservatory in winter
    9. Do the light kits tend to come with the hooks etc for lowing the light to the right height?

Any helps and points will be much appreciated. When I do start, I plan on making a day by day diary, from start to finish......so hope someone can walk me through the process so I know whats ready/needed as and when.

I hope it all goes well, 2nd attempt I plan to try more advanced stuff like scrogging, and making clones etc....but need to get the very basics right first

    Cheers guys
