    Default D.I.Y Extraction Fan Silencer....

    Hey guys/girls.

As some of you are aware (And if you're not, you've learnt something.) If you buy a cheap fan speed controller (Varii speed controller ect ect..) You'll find once you turn the speed of the fan down, it will make a humming sound (Not all fans do this as far as I am aware). And this could be a serious breach of being stealth, and even if noise isn't so much of a problem, it's just nice to not have the fan humming in your ear while you're working with your plants.

So in this real quick tutorial, I'll explain how to build a silenced fan box

Please note: I take no responsibility if this doesn't work (I've not made it yet ) and I take no responsibility for what you decide to use it for either.

    Tools needed:

1x Toy box (Can be bought in various stores in the UK such as B&M, QD, ect ect)
1x sheet of kingspan/celotex ect ect..
    1x pen
    1x cutting tool for plastic.
    1x glue spray/liquid.

    Step one:

Take your fan, and circle round your fan where the ducting conects, and then cut out the hole do this on both sides.

    Step two:

Take your insulation and cut it into sections so that it fits inside your box perfectly. Also cut sections out for your ducting.

    Step 3:

Glue/tape your insulation to the insides of your box including the lid.

Step 4: put the fan into the box and then push both pieces of ducting out of the holes. And put the lid back on. (do not attach to the carbon filter just yet.)

Step 5: Plug fan in, and keep lowering/heightening the speed to check for noise.

Step 6: Once you've checked the noise levels of the fan, then connect it back into your Carbon filter.

Step 7: If you're having your fan inside of your room/tent then attach it with rope or something simular.

Step 8: Everything should now be pretty much silent (If not silent a hell of alot quieter).

Step 9: Post here with your results

I'm going to try this with polystyrene chips instead of the kingspan insulation, will post feedback how it goes.

Try it, and let me know if it works, and if so if it's any good .

I'm half tempted to add pics of my build of it when i get a toy box lol.

I was going to just use silver backed acoustic insulation wrapped around my fans and tied shut with cable ties at each end but just worried that the fans will overheat?

    they wont over heat mate.

Yeah that's my only concern but I've got to silence them a bit more, I can hear it from outside the room and even though it's only me I'd rather be overly cautious. I don't want to box them as I've not got the skills or the room for that at the moment

    Hi mate,

I don't have a fan, but am interested in this side of things. I do have some questions...

    1. Are you saying that it is the speed controller that creates the noise and not the fan?... So if you removed the controller, it would be quiet again?
    2. Why do you use a controller? (I can't see why you would want to slow down the extraction of air)

The few times I have seen a fan working is on Youtube, and they sound very loud. Yet, when I look on ebay, they say "almost silent" or "extremely quiet" etc.

I've had the extractor fan on in the bathroom once, and that was very noisy. Are grow tent fans like that? or are they like a standard oscillating desk fan?

    Thank you
