I haven't fished in over 30 years. I used to fish for eels at Marshside (Kent) every year in summer. And used to fish at Tilgate Park (Crawley) and in another lake nearby, which had carp in there. The place was taken over by Radio Mercury. I still prefer to fish by hand. I did it all the time in the Gatwick Stream / River Mole.

I used to catch sticklebacks, stone loach, lampreys, bullheads, and one trout. There was a nice pike in there too, but Jaws wasn't long out in the cinema, and I was young, so I didn't try to catch it, even though I touched it a few times and it didn't swim away. - All that was in the Gatwick Stream. All other fishing was by rod, but I found that boring for most of the season. It was okay at the beginning of one (season) because all the young fish were as thick as fuck, and you'd get bites as you were setting your lines - gudgeon and perch, mainly. If you wanted carp, you had to go where the lillies were (in this particular late) but you could go all day and not catch anything. As soon as the season set in, the young fish are now wiser, and far less bites. That's when I get bored, as I have a short attention spam. That's why fishing by hand was more fun.
If I wasn't fishing by hand in the stream, I'd be collecting frogs, toads, slow worms, lizards and snakes (by hand) I miss my childhood days.
