    I have the planter already just need a mulch layer. Didnt know if a plastic layer was really needed

    15L is more than sufficient. My preferred pot size for autos is 10L

    Not needed at all, even mulch isn't strictly necessary but obviously does help reduce evaporation from the top.

    If you have air prune holes on the side of your bucket (and the bucket lined with geotextile) then you'll have quite a bit of evaporation from the side already so leaving the top unmulched won't add much to it. Water only wicks up so far so the top isn't soaking wet to begin with.

    Which is roughly what you end up with when using a 15 liter bucket and a water reservoir made from a geotextive wrapped donut of 80mm drainage pipe and an inch or two of sand on top pf that as the wick.
