Cannabis and psychosis: what do we know and what should we do?

    The British Journal of*Psychiatry*Volume 212,*Issue 4**April 2018*, pp. 195-196

It is now incontrovertible that heavy use of cannabis increases the risk of psychosis. There is a dose–response relationship and high potency preparations and synthetic cannabinoids carry the greatest risk. It would be wise to await the outcome of the different models of legalisation that are being introduced in North America, before deciding whether or not to follow suit.

Marijuana is a medicine which has been used in Ayurveda for more than 5000 years. Only pharma companies and wine industry wants this medicine to be banned.

I recently uncovered an interesting article about the connection between using cannabis and mental health illness among young people. And there's an interesting statistic:
"Some 60% of participants had used cannabis by the age of 20; 7% were daily users at that point. Daily use in young women was associated with an over fivefold increase in the odds of reporting a state of depression and anxiety after adjustment for intercurrent use of other substances (odds ratio 5.6, 95% confidence interval 2.6 to 12). Weekly or more frequent cannabis use in teenagers predicted an approximately twofold increase in risk for later depression and anxiety (1.9, 1.1 to 3.3) after adjustment for potential baseline confounders. In contrast, depression and anxiety in teenagers predicted neither later weekly nor daily cannabis use".
What do you think about it? Also on Addiction Resource, I read a lot about such things. I smoke sometimes but don't believe that weed is a good thing for our health at all.

I remember reading a few papers on this subject a while ago. For young developing minds there can be very real risks, for schizophrenia it was also interesting, a person predisposed to this illness can have it triggered earlier than might naturally occur, but for those with no genetic potential there was no risk of it developing at all at any age. Unless newer information has now been discovered.

A young fragile mind should steer clear of the higher THC strains, having said that I was smoking at age 14 but the weed was different 'way' back then, not so strong. Young'uns be careful, know your own mind, if it doesn't 'feel' right find another way to relax or stick to weaker strains for a few years.
