    Default The Dreaded Rot

    Bud Rot and What Not

Ok, this will be different from most guides, I'm not gonna explain what bud rot is and how you got it just yet. Most readers are going to be here in a panic as they suspect, or even confirmed, they have rot. For those of you who have come here researching before you have come across rot, well done to you! Prevention is always better than cure, but for those who are suffering with the dreaded rot, there is no time to waste, we have to get his fixed now.

    Rot, looks like this:

Bud rot is another name for Gray Mold, and its spread very quickly! So we have to act fast, and carefully, as we want to prevent the spread of those spores as much as possible.

First off, you need to turn off your fans before going anywhere near the infected area. As soon as you touch the infected site, spores will be released into the air, if your fans are one, they're going to blow around and find new places to germinate.

    You will need;

Plastic bags, ( Sandwhich bags, Carrier bags, anything to cover the infected buds to prevent further spread of spores)
    Clean scissors
    Composure!!

This is a tough time for any grower, to find your buds, no matter how few, infected like this can be devastating. For now you have to stay calm, you can break down later. Get in the grow room and remove anything that is rotten. The cruel thing about bud rot is it likes to live inside the dense buds, so your biggest, juiciest buds, are the ones that are most likely to be infected. Check inside them by carefully opening them up and looking into the inner parts, if it looks dull, brown, anything that looks like any of these pics. it will need removing, sorry.

Have a good look around, look for any yellow crinkled leaves, grey dead looking patches in the buds. Bits of bud may easily fall off when touched. You have to be very careful not to damage the plants whilst doing this, as the mould spores need to get into the plant itself via a cut or wound to germinate, be extra careful.

If you identify any rot, stop looking further and remove it immediately! Place a bag over the bud, and chop below the rot and remove. Seal the bag to prevent further spores escaping, and then continue with your search, and repeat if you find more rot. Have no mercy, remove anything that looks infected. These buds will not be good to smoke, or make oils out of, or use in any way! DO NOT USE INFECTED BUDS!! Throw them away!

Once everything has been removed, and you're confident the rest of your plants are free from infection, you have to make steps to prevent it spreading and germinating again. There are millions of mould spores everywhere in there now, and you do not want them to germinate. A mold spore is pretty much like a seed. It can lay dormant until it gets the right conditions, and then it will grow.

Turn your fans back on, on a higher setting if possible, and add extra fans to the grow room. One of the reasons bud rot has germinated in your groom, is bad air circulation. This needs addressing straight away, you need better airflow, and better extraction to remove moisture and heat out of the room. Don't let it get too cold though, mold with thrive under 20c, in a humid environment. Keep your temps above 20c, and you shouldn't see mould develop.

Keep any eye out over the next few days, keep the fans running at high power 24/7, and keep them temps above 20c. If you see any more rot form, you may want to consider cutting the whole harvest down as the infection may have spread to far.

Thats all you can do, no saving the bud, no using it for something else, bud rot really is the main adversary of the ganja grower! Bugs we can handle, deficiency, adjust the feed, bud rot... cut the bud off and throw it away. Some might use their rotten buds for oils, as they think only the thc is extracted. But recent tests on oil in America has shown a high percentage of Gray mold spores, and these should not be smoked! Never use the rotten buds, its gone, forget about it, and move on, its not worth the potential health risks!

Good luck! I hope you sort it all out and it doesn't spread further! You can run off now and get that done if you like. But hurry back because we need to go over why this happened, and how to prevent it happening again in the future. Rot is horrible and the worst thing to discover in your grow, but it is also very easily avoidable if you have the right environment.

What is bud rot, and why does it hate you?

    Gray Mold

    Bud Rot

Bud rot is a mindless fungus life form, that is properly named " Gray Mold", but as it effects our buds, most cannabis growers refer to it as bud rot, for obvious reasons. See this is what happened: ( names have been changed for protection of identity, and are also merely coincidental)

Susan, down the road, left some strawberries out in her garden after a BBQ with the family over the weekend to celebrate her 50th!! Congrats Susan! Those strawberries though, they got a bit moldy, so Susan threw them away, as you do, thinking nothing of it. Little did she know, her actions would cause something far more sinister to arise! The Gray Mold spores had spread into the air around her, and began their journey, to find a new home to live in. Luckily, they feel a slight pull, a draft sucking them in a particular direction.... your intake!! They are drawn to it, and follow it blindly. As they get close, it is clear, they are heading into a huge silver tunnel, and at the end of that tunnel is a fine green paradise of ganja mountains. They can rest there, and maybe, if the conditions become ideal, they can spread! Polluting the whole paradise with tiny demonic versions of themselves.

Whilst all of this is going on, you're chilling, play some computer game, watching some youtube videos, or videos on a more 18+ kind of website, what ever. There was nothing you could of done to prevent the mold spores getting into your tent. These things just happen. Mold is everywhere, and travels easily in the breeze or on your clothes and hair, and is so small you would never see it.

But just because we cant see it, and we cant stop it getting to our plants, does not mean we cant stop it from germinating. As I said earlier, mold is a fungus, and a mold spore, is essentially, a mold seed. It needs the right conditions in order to germinate and grow. As long as we can avoid these conditions, those spores will never germinate in the first place, and your buds will be rot free, which of course, is ideal for everyone!

    Prevention is better than cure.

Some rules you must follow in order to prevent bud rot from germinating, and spreading in your grow room:

    1. Keep temperatures above 20c / 70f, to prevent spores germinating. The spores like a nice cool humid environment, and will thrive in cool climates. Temperature is half the battle, keep it above 20c, and you should stay clear of any rot or mould.

    2. Air circulation and extraction is massively important. Controlling the air flow will keep humidity down. You do not want your humidity to go over 60% in any stage of growth, but especially in the later stages of flower. Any higher than this and the mold spores will germinate. Keeping the humidity lower than 60%, preferably lower than 55% will also reduce the risk of mold germinating massively! Good air flow is very important. Make sure you have more than one fan, and make sure they are all oscillating. A still fan will not move all the air, and blast your plants in one place too much and give you fan/ wind burn.

    3. Bandage/ tape up and wounds or break in your plant. The gray mold spore will want to get into your plant, so it can spread from the inside out. We all like a bit of defoliation, or topping, and this can leave a wound for the spores to enter and start germinating. Make sure you tape up any wounds, and maybe even consider a drop of honey on any breaks or damage of the stem to help seal the wound faster. AVOID ANY DAMAGE AT ALL LATE IN FLOWER!!

    4. Don't let the grow get too bushy. The bushier it is, the less air movement there is. Mold will thrive in stale pockets of moist air, so another effective way to keep it away is to ensure you have given the plants a good trim. That way, your fans can reach every where around all of your plants, and there will be no stale air pockets. Of course, think about rule 3 with this one, dont leave open wounds if you can help it.

5 BUY A DEHUMIDIFIER!! Sometimes, we can't help high humidity, when is been warm outside for ages and you get a massive downpour, humidity can be well over 60 in the environment around your grow room. This means, you're pulling in humid air, and blowing out humid air. There is nothing a fan can do to bring it down. For this you need a good 10l minimum dehumidifier. You wont need it all the time, but its better to have it, and not need it, than need it and not have it. Dont buy those daft things from poundland, they don't work, you need a proper dehum, one you plug in!

Keep the temps warm and humidity low, with some good airflow is key here. But there is somethings we can not help. Massive buds!

Some buds will grow so big, that they cannot breath efficiently on the inside. The air gets trapped, becomes stale and humid, and of course, as you now know, mold loves those conditions. If a mold spore was in there, under those conditions, there is nothing you can do. Just cross your fingers, Pray to which ever god is yours, and hope for the best.

If you are here because you have rot, I hope this has helped you realise its not the end of the world, you can save some crop, but consider it a lesson learned. We have all had to learn it at some point, I have had rot, many of the growers I know have had it at some point. Don't feel too bad, or be too hard on yourself. This is how we all learn, mistakes are our best lessons! Don't let this one go unlearned!

Bud rot or the spores also like to live in our chests/lungs and if ya plants have it we don’t want it so a paper dust mask at minimum before ya start entering and fucking about with the plants . A Old carbon filter on ya intake will stop any unwanted nastys getting into ya room 😃🇬🇧
