I do mine in a sort of S-hook so the wire does not go all the way around the stem. Either use a heavier gauge wire, or fabricate one by twisting a few lengths of the green twist ties together like a rope. So one side of the S (or a C) goes over the stem, the other hooks the lip of the pot.
=No drilling, no rough bits on the pot to catch onto clothing or trap dirt, unlikely for stem growth to get ligatured off by the wire.
I agree with regards to the medium, but I would tap the plant out of the bucket, top that with soil, put plant back, fill the sides with soil. But that's just me. This might also add a week or so to your grow.
