    Default Seed Cracks Then Dies?

Hi all, on Saturday I was finally ready to begin my maiden voyage in my newly built indoor grow room. After months of tweaking and change in order to get the humidity/temp/airflow correct, and after doing a short, successful test run with a scrap (probably hermaphrodite) seed, I was ready.

Being a massive Jimi fan, I decided that my single Purple Haze fem seed would be the most appropriate to start my journey. Friday evening the seed is soaked in water for 6 hours and then set in moist toilet paper in a small propagator box, covered with a shirt to block any light and set on top of my PC case (which stayed on 24/7 for the next two days) for warmth. In the interest of full disclosure, being more nervous and afraid of failure than impatient, I'll say that I probably checked in on the seed a bit too often. Fast forward to Sunday, and the only change I see in the seed is the colouring went from a relatively lighter brown/darker gradient to the colour of a ripe, healthy seed - that being a dark, consistent brown.

I decide I'm going crazy and the best course of action is to just plant the seed in the Rockwool, set it in my DWC system under the light, with some lava rocks to lightly cover it and the propagator lid over it.

On Monday I got excited because the seed finally cracked and I could JUST see the white curve of the new stem - no tap root but that could be underneath and I wasn't about to disturb the seed then. The thing is, there has been no change whatsoever since then and its Wednesday, two days later. Is it possible by baby died or slowed down or stunted in any way? Is there anything obvious I did to ruin this?

Apologies for the long post for something so simple, I just felt I had to provide as much info regarding what I did in case there was something obvious and singular that I did to kill the seed (if that is the case).

Thank you all in advance <3

I was just following one of Bud Lightyears older grow diaries and something occurred to me. Could the change in temperature have killed/slowed down the growth of the seedling? Going from a warmer propagation box on top of my PC to wet Rockwool planted in my DWC system in the grow room? The rooms temp is a constant 23-24c and the top-most area in the DWC bucket (the air above the nutrient solution) is a little warmer and more humid, naturally. Plus the propagation box lid is covering the net pot + rockwool with seed.

Perhaps she just hasnt been able to fully emerge from her shell. so she starts her life inside then the stem pops out, but no root. i would inspect it mate and see if there is a root, if so leave it be. dont let it be soaking either, i find seed germination is better when they search a bit for water. Have a look mate, sounds like you may need to pop another so a look shouldnt hurt, be creful ok

Do you think I could have actually outright killed it or just slowed its growth down because of the added moisture in the Rockwool? Either way, I'm going to be leaving it alone for at least another 3 or 4 days just to make doubly sure (quality seeds are scarce and hard to come by where I'm from). I'll keep the thread updated if anything happens, though.

Any and all forms of comment, discussion, thoughts and opinion are still very welcome.

I switched to the ziplock bag method because I can see the seeds without affecting the humidity. I like to check on them often as well.
My last germ was 6 seeds. 4 popped in 2 days. 1 popped 4 days later and the last a week after.
    Cheers.

Would you mind explaining briefly how to do the ziplock bag method? I've only ever heard of putting the moist toilet paper in a ziplock bag in order to prevent it from drying out quickly. But it sounds like you're saying you can actually SEE the seed without opening the zippy bag in the method you're talking about?

I fold the paper in half a few times so it can sit nicely in bottom of the bag. Wet the towel with bottled water and give it a light squeeze so it is not dripping. Seeds on top of the towel so completely visible. Bag closed and into a temperature controlled light proof environment. I am going to look for photos.

That sounds really good, man. It looks great too. I'll definitely be doing this method the next time I need to pop a seed.

No problem. Any seed that goes 5 or 6 days without popping comes back out and gets gently scraped on the seam and then back into the bag.
