ahh sorry for not getting back sooner, balancing them only applies if you have a gravity return, which your system doesn't.
yours is using a pump to putt the nutrient thru the buckets and is more of a proper recirculating system.
when I said balancing the returns , I meant that if you keep the returns in the exact centres on both sides, the pull from the gravity returns will be equalised from both sides meaning the roots don't get drawn to or thru a pipe, they just kinda float.
because yours is a single pipe in, single pipe out system, and nutes are pulled thru the system, your best bet is to rotate the pots a 1/4 turn every day or 2, to prevent roots migrating down the out pipe. placing an airstone near the out pipe also helps float them to avoid root blockage issues.
