I thought L1 was for 3 wire fans????
I am an electrical numpty and the instructions are non existent. Doh. :-)
I now see why I spent way more on a rhino controller! Plug and play.
This was my best efforts based off looking round web. No LED even with the fan not wired in makes me wonder though!
Swapped the fan live to L1 - the same.
Where should I look for a new fuse? Hardware store?

Much better
You can check fuse with a 9v battery & your tongue...fuse to one terminal, tongue to other end of fuse and other terminal...If your eyeballs light up, fuse is good
Maybe ceramic, no difference between that and glass in terms of fuse function. You need a 20mm 3A Fast Acting
Just had a thought...If you have wired the live of the fan to L1, this should have run the fan on full...If it didn't, that output doesn't go throught the variac just the fuse so fuse popped is a high possibilty

Many thanks AND and British Green.
As predicted by AND - the unit had arrived new but with a blown fuse.
Fortunately the local hardware shop had a pack of 20mm 3amp fuses.
All running now. Just need to build a box for the fan.
