Like BB said never check PH in water going in or out. Don't know any thing about oldtimers, can't get it on this side of the pond. I'm happy using Tiger Bloom, and nothing else most of the time. Only reason I know what my water PH is, I sent in a free water test kit, and they sent me the results.

I couldn't happily water my plants with anything that I'd not checked the ph of. It's a logarithmic scale mate, pH 7 is neutral. pH 6 is ten times more acidic than 7. pH 5 is ten times more acidic than 5, but as it's a log10 scale, this means it's a hundred times more acidic than 7. A little different than assuming it's literally 1x or 2x stronger. A few years ago I'd started using a seaweed liquid, didn't pH as "YoU doNT NeeD tO In sOiL"
Grow fucked up, the seaweed was ridiculously acidic and screwed me big time. I didn't have a pH pen at the time, but by the time I realised there was an issue the damage was done.
The organic nutes are usually mixed with an acid to improve shelf life, biobizz are more acidic than I'd have assumed so I had to adjust accordingly
End of the day mate, everyone has their different ways. If you can afford a decent pH pen (bluelab) then get one. If not than don't bother, but try have some consistency in your watering and feeding, don't go mixing different brands of nutrients and you should have a successful grow regardless
When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all.
