The jury is out (from what I'm seeing in my experiments) But between the 3rd & 4th real node works well

Ive always judged it by time too, if they're doing well between week 2 and week 3, i'll top them but if they're small during that time, i leave them.

Ive not long just topped my autos for the first time and I think It's a tricky one I only topped one of mine out of the 4 and one split off into two by its self, the other two I didn't think I'd have enough time but they went and had the longest veg time ever so I could have topped them to be honest but I didn't expect such long veg. maybe it's also quite rare to get such a long veg time for autos I'm not sure, but I'm like day 56 or summit and one is in flower and the other 3 have just pretty much started

I just done what everyone above said

    4-5 node is perfect .

Or you can bend the top down to let the side branching catch up . It stresses them less . And just keep the branching level afterwards is all

2nd node topping on this Glue Gelato

Livers were 3rd node (mentored grow in signature)

But it answer to the question, no its no different a process regardless of node.

I do however like to remove the false leaf and branching at that node when I top (BB STYLE)
