    Default Fan controllers & hum....

I had a eureka moment the other day.... I currently use a 5" RVK for extraction but was playing with a 6" one...

Now my extractor goes to a fan controller. Actually, the fan controller works my intake (4" RVK) & extraction too

Now I have no issue with fan hum on my 5" unless it reduces to an almost idle speed, then I hear it - slightly....

The 6" (yeah, the smallest one with the big capacitor on the side) - Hum baby hum! No use for me

However, my food for thought was, is it only the larger fans with the external capacitor that need variac controlling to prevent hum/buzz?

Don't rate them variac can't go low enough without the hum, them control freaks are pretty good for noise and temp control works spot on for me, I sleep less than 6ft from a 5" and 4" running 24/7 no issues sleeping

Hum is caused by el cheapo controllers using an AC chop as control, this removes the top & bottom half of the waveform and varies the RMS voltage (under load) to the appliance under control. It is a very 'noisy' way of doing things. A Variac employs a different method so hum shouldn't be a problem
