Default C:N ratio of compost/vermicompost inputs

Just putting this here coz everytime someone asks me about it, it takes me like 30 minutes to bloody find it by scrolling my old threads

Future reference for me and anyone thats intersted in Carbon to nitrogen ratios

    Optimal 30:1 C:N

    Estimated Carbon-to-Nitrogen Ratios

    Browns = High Carbon C:N
    Ashes, wood 25:1
    Cardboard, shredded 350:1
    Corn stalks 75:1
    Fruit waste 35:1
    Leaves 60:1
    Newspaper, shredded 175:1
    Peanut shells 35:1
    Pine needles 80:1
    Sawdust 325:1
    Straw 75:1
    Wood chips 400:1

    Greens = High Nitrogen N:C
    Alfalfa 12:1
    Clover 23:1
    Coffee grounds 20:1
    Food waste 20:1
    Garden waste 30:1
    Grass clippings 20:1
    Hay 25:1
    Manures 15:1
    Seaweed 19:1
    Vegetable scraps 25:1
    Weeds 30:1

To use the list a little math amd judgement is required but the basic idea is..

If I got 1 handful of shredded cardboard at 350 to 1 carbon to nitrogen...

To achieve a 30:1 compost I will need to add something at 12 to 1 N to C

So a handfull of Alfalfa would be a perfect balance

If I was using straw however... I would need 4 handfuls of straw to 1 alfalfa...

Its is difficult to achieve with compost in my opinion and be sustainable. However you can get a reasonable balance

However it can easily be achieved in a worm bin.

No need to overthink a compost Gaz . Just toss in anything you want in there in moderation bit of this bit of that . I have a big family so we have alot and i mean tons of vegetable and fruit scraps that get tossed in .

I make about 2cu Meters of compost per year and its very well balanced along the lines of 1-1-1 .

Exactly my point brother and one you have taught me.

What goes in dictates what comes out at every step from build to bud

In the end of the day I only posted as a convenience for me and those that ask me about it.

If anyone doesnt agree thats absolutely fine but Im not really up for a massive debate here. Everyone grows good weed here at the Talk and I respect everyone wether I agree with stuff or not.
