Hahaha like my dad always says .
    Rule #1 im always right
Rule#2 when in doubt always refer to rule #1 ^^^ pmsl

But as rule of thumb for composting .
Peels and stems of most vegies contain alot of P and K lower in N
    Greens N and less P n K
    Manures N
Dried Leaves Carbon and a mix match of nutrients depending what .

Well layered and mulched as fine as possible . I like a layer of hay between layerz as it creates good aeration . A few shovel fulls of Grass clippings . Very high in N to get pile heating up . A good watering with seaweed .molasses and fish or a compost tea to get the pile going even faster .
It will heat up . Steam even .turn that pile every 3 days . This is for an aerobic pile . I dont believe in anerobic piles because infeststions of all sorts can happen as they dont heat up and are starving for air .

I know your busy tonight Gaz so figured id leave this here for you to come across and anyone else having issues working out ratios of what to put it

Me and Gaz were talking earlier as my compost pile smelt abit and needed some more browns. Been out and bought a bale of barley straw so needed to know how much straw to put in compared to the grass cuttings i added a couple days ago

Ive been looking at the ratios completely wrong and thought i needed about 20 times more straw than grass cuttings... decided this because i was looking at the 'greens' C:N ratio in reverse, so actually seeing it as N:C i.e. grass cuttings C:N is 20:1 however i was looking at it as 1:20

So ive had a look and figured how to work out the ratios!

    Example
Barley straw has a ratio of 85:1 (Brown)
    Grass cuttings 20:1 (Green)

Barley straw has approximately 4 times more C:N

Because of this we use 4 parts grass cuttings to 1 part straw and we know this because 4 x 20 (the grass cuttings C content) = 80. Adding this to 85 (C content of the straw) gives us 165. If we divide this by 5 (the total sum of 'parts' used) this gives us the overall C:N ratio which, in this case, gives us 33:1

Hope this helps a few people as its definitely helped me

Its all your fault Gaz atleast weve gotten to the bottom of it!

Not sure if you mentioned it also but everywhere ive looked it says to aim for a 2:1 ratio of greens to browns if you plan to make the pile then just turn it or a 1:1 roughly for a pile you plan to keep adding to. The extra part of greens in the first instance is to make sure you have enough N to keep decomposition at a decent rate
