As an update, I can't believe how well the process works and how simple it was. No wrapping, just sit the buds on a sheet of newspaper and either leave it bare or layer another one on top. Just make sure to leave plenty of room for air movement. They dry fairly quickly but not excessively and are pretty much ready for whatever you want to do with them.
When you first take them out of the fridge, they seem overly dry and a little crispy on the edges, but as soon as they warm up, they soften up and are smokable or ready for mason jars if you do it. They seem to lose most of their chlorophyll taste and smell and I'm sure they will only get better as they age a little.

Thanks for the great idea! I think most refrigerator methods fail because there is a container or a bag involved. Hanging in and empty fridge with a large carbon filter next to the fridge in a small room could be exactly what I need. Looking forward to hearing some other results here. I would dedicate a fridge to drying if this works as described.

Like you, drying has been a real issue for me. I do find that a 12 month cure can fix even the worst drying failure when cured at 62%
