Thread: Home Made Fungus Gnat Trap

  1. Lightbulb Home Made Fungus Gnat Trap

    Hi Talkers,

    So I was researching a little and created a very simple but effective Fungus Gnat Fly Trap... Fungus gnats in particular love this trap, however many other flies get trapped too so could be very useful in combination with - redisiels - IPM (integrated pest management) - Clicky

    So after an hour of making this trap, the results blew me away and I knew I had to share it with you all as it really is simple yet effective!

    All you need is ;

    • Apple Cider Vinegar
    • Spare Cup
    • Sticky sheet or even paper will do! (if you make the hole small enough they can't get back up and get stuck.)
    • Washing up liquid (if using plain paper).

    - Add the Apple Cider Vinegar inside the cup (you don't need much). If using plain paper add a drop or two of washing up liquid to the Apple Cider Vinegar (The soap cuts the surface tension of the vinegar so the flies will sink and drown).

    - Cut some paper or this sticky plastic to size, make it into a funnel and place inside cup (if using plain paper, make sure the funnel forms a nice small hole at the bottom).

    Here are the results after an hour outside in my garden next to some tomato plants, many fungus gnats have been caught along with a wide range of other flies too.

    I stuck some stones to the bottom of my cup with masking tape as I was testing this outside with my tomatoes and it's quite windy so I didn't want it tipping over.

    This is an hours results ;

    Just to add, if you don't want to use paper or even sticky sheets then you can simply add clingfilm over the cup, add multiple small holes on the top of the clingfilm with a toothpick etc, once they get in, they don't come out.

    Hope this helps someone

    You're welcome Macca, I'll add this vinegar does have a very strong smell but being inside the tent, it will get sucked out of the exhaust anyway so wont effect anyones living areas..all about balance I suppose

    Same, will be adding tomorrow. Lets see the damage done by the largess of the outside regime.

    I do expect the worse!

    Remind me, need to post my fitted wardrobe project!

    Ice : I assume it is the sugar attracting the files? Why Cyder? Wouldn't wine work as well?
