"It would depend on what type of soil that you are using, as well as what has been mixed into it. Perlite is usually added to add air space and to keep soils from compacting, as well as aiding in drainage. As long as the soil doesn't get too hard, the roots will be fine, but watch out for standing water in the root zone as it can cause root rot. Dirt plus water = mud, so make sure that you don't have that problem... you want to keep the soil as loose as feasible and things will take care of themselves, hopefully!"
