    Default C3 plants

    One way in which plants are categorized is by the way they gather and handle carbon dioxide.

    Cannabis is a C3 plant. It uses the CO2 it gathers during the light period, when it is photosynthesizing.

    Plants designated C4 also gather CO2 during the dark period for use during the light period.

    Many C3 plants, including cannabis, do not need a rest period. They continue to photosynthesize as long as they are receiving light.

    I thought I'd add this as people are confused about this...

    In short, you can tell anyone that says that cannabis needs a dark period to grow that they are talking total bollox!

    The only dark period cannabis needs is to flower a photoperiod plant. Autos are more than happy with a 24/0 - despite what uninformed people think!

    Isnt this because that with auto's, they are 'spliced' with ruderalis which grows in the extreme North where their growing period coincides with their summer and often have 23hrs of daylight? Evolution is cool AF!

    Nope. Cannabis is a C3 plant... read the post again

    The only thing that cannabis needs dark time for is for a photoperiod to flower... but a photoperiod cannabis plant is still a C3 plant

    But is it really worth the extra expense as well?
    Would be nice if people started measuring their yields in gram per kWh and noting the light schedule, if we'd all do that in 2020 perhaps we can spot a pattern of what exactly is the most efficient light schedule for autoflowers although we would need a lot of date to get any conclusive results with all the genetic diversity of cannabis strains.

    Or someone could do a comparison, preferably with clones, under different schedules but that requires quite the setup.

    There is a limit though. Daylight integral comes into play.

    The 'correct amount' of light will be fine per hour for 24 hours.

    Leave a plant in midday sunlight permanently ( i.e. artificially ) and it will drop dead quite quickly. Even a sativa

    Northern latitude may well get long extended day light hours, but the light is diffuse, often clouded over and just not very good.

    Alternatively, hit a light with 24000w ( an arbitrary number ) for one hour and it will grow the same as a plant in 1000w for 24 hours. Not so simple at the limits but the general correlation holds.

    Plants flop & pray throughout the day regardless of what the internals are doing

    That is why I'll be running autos instead of the photos that I prefer.
    The heating pad uses only 42w and won't be running all the time since it's thermostat controlled and it will be in the freezer segment of a fridge which I'm separating from the plant area with a sheet of advertisement board with tight fitting holes for the pots.
    Light is a bit oversized as well, 180watt LED for only 44x49cm of space so they won't be lacking any lumens that's for sure.

    But why don't indoor lettuce growers run their lights on 24h a day then if that really speeds up growth? Lettuce is C3 as well and they are generally grown under 10-14 h of lights, as far as I know they are not photoperiodic in terms of seeding but this is triggered by excessive heat instead.

    Good question on the lettuce!

    Maybe it is more cost efficient, staff wise doing it like that?
