    Default Going in the loft

    Hi all

Im planning to start a grow in my loft in the next few weeks, iv just had new roof done off council and its insulated but its got a lot of dust and rubble in there atm so il have to clean that up lol.

So im no good at diy and never even been in a loft in my life but i have stuck my head up and it looks a decent size to hopefully do a 1.2x1.2 tent. I will get up and measure properly once all the scaffold is down.

I just want to know what the easiest and cheapest way to put a floor down in there so i can put a tent up? Iv got a pack a laminate flooring would that do?

Sorry for stupid questions and thanks for any help!

You know what type of roof you got? Purling or pitched? The process of converting a loft is to strengthen the floor area. To do this you need to distribute the weight of the new 'sub' floor to the load beaing walls rather than just adding joints ontop of the ones underneath

I think mine is purling mate. Not 100% i could find out though.

iv seen a few deals of joiners doing 100sqm flooring, a ladder and light for £300 ish. I could do this in future but wanting to hopefully get one grow done first so i can save some money. My dad told me to put a couple of doors down but dont think thats practical

Laminate floor won’t do mate. What I did was buy so 18mm chipboard loft boards. You can get them I’m B&Q. I checked the area to ensure there were no cables present on the ceiling joists the fixed the boards directly to the area. And made a walkway and storage area. Then I ran a 4mm cable from my consumer unit to my loft and put a small garage unit in there for some sockets and lights.

At the very least you want a small subframe hanging from the purlings. A few doors is abit too dodgy. My dad would probs say the same thing tbh . Some 3x2 cls and joist hangers doesnt cost much and will be alot better than just skrewing just boards down to the joists as your adding dead weight to them

Ill look into them boards mate thanks a lot. For the sockets i was going to buy i 10m extension lead and just run it down through celling into a bedroom and got a hidden socket behind a wardrobe so you wouldn’t see the wire going up lol . I wouldn’t be to run a cable from my consumer unit my self mate unfortunately, i could ask the old man, hell probably say yes then blow the place up

Yes loft fitters often do it for small spans. 4 x 2 if not bigger is better but 3 x 2 cls Is better than just boarding stright to your existing joists
