Cartoons! What are your favorites to watch (high or otherwise)
We live in an age of great cartoons. I credit The Simpsons as the first to show that cartoons can be relevant for adults. I still love The Simpsons.
But, when I really want to watch a cartoon, it's going to be one of the following:
- Rick and Morty - the gold standard, as far as I'm concerned. Seriously messed up at times, but also very clever without trying to impress you with how intellectual their humor is. I never thought I'd like watching someone who's an irredeemable asshole.
- Futurama - Bender and Frye make the show. I like the other characters, but it's always fun to see Bender be Bender (a possibly evil robot who loves his liquor) and Fry be Frye (an idiot who has a good heart, and always does something stupid). I would also include The Professor in that group. They don't need to evolve as characters.
- Family Guy - Another show about an irredeemable asshole (actually, a whole show about assholes), but they're so much like us. I've watched so many with my son that the novelty has worn off, but it usually makes me laugh (when they're not making me think, "did they cross a line just then"?)
- South Park - at their best, they have done some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen on TV. I will watch the "goth kids vs. vampire kids" episode a hundred times, and still laugh. They spent waaaayy too much time with Saddam Hussein, but they're back again to their brilliant best.
My son also liked to watch these when he was younger. I will watch either if they're on, but I don't think about them as much:
- Sponge Bob Squarepants - Sponge Bob. Patrick. Mr. Crabs. Plankton. One-time characters like Sergeant Samuel "Sam" Roderick, a drill sergeant shark who teaches in place of Mrs. Puff one day. I forgot how amazing it is to be silly and funny without being crude.
- Adventuretime - a real buddy show. Like Futurama, there are good characters, but Finn and Jake are so awesome that you want their adventures to go on forever.
So....what shows do you like?
Oh...almost forgot. I just heard about this one (Disenchantment). They had episodes playing in the waiting area at my dispensary in Detroit, and I am just starting to watch.
