I heard about this, and more last time I was in Amsterdam.

They also wish to reduce the amount of 'windows' in Red Light District and are trying to get rid of the coffee shops & seed/paraphernalia sellers too

...and they are also trying to gentrify the Red Light District too

Not entirely the same but this reminded me of the episode "The City Part of Town" of South Park S19 E03, "SoDoSoPa".

    I thought the same!

I used to like to pop into Baba's shop & look at their glassware... and usually buy something to come home with But last time, half their floor space was taken with tacky souvenirs (think clogs & postcards), apparently it was by order of he powers that be... or be threatened with being closed as it was, apparently, the 'wrong sort of business' for the area FFS!

Wasn't the Netherlands the ones that did a super modern liberal pro-LGBT immigration video that got them some heat, may be roughly 5-6 years ago? I wonder if that is related?

Don't care.... Baba's used to have the most exquisite glassware, much of it too intricate to travel with (and bloody expensive!). No loud music being blasted out, no hard sell - the place was a pleasure to visit. It is places like that I see as improving an areas standing, not dragging it down! But I'm probably just a bit pissy as the best steak house in Amsterdam (IMHO) was a little further up & now it is a hipster paradise burger joint

Don't get me wrong, sometimes things go too far.... my first visit to the Dam saw me & the missus looking in a sex shop with videos that had pictures on their videos that didn't appear in 'Lassie come home' ! (but we did find a great place for a fry up - that has also gone)

Yeah, that can all get a bit dodgy after a couple of smokes!

I met up with an ex member in Dam once, 5 pints & a few spliffs later I was just bloody cannon fodder for the bloody cycles

If they could find a way of getting rid of the stag and hen do's it would go a long way towards chilling the area out. I tend to buy my stash and nutella waffles and retreat to my ps4 in a rented apartment when I go so nearly pointless going. Nice not to have home distractions for a few days tho

Me too, it's still a break though and a change. Of all the times I've been, I only ever went red light a few times, couldn't stand it. I thought the stag and hen do thing would have been spread about now, Prague, Krakow etc Just shows how cheap it is now to get around and how many are doing it.

I must admit there is a part of me that has been tempted to move there! But now that we are out of the EU (and I do believe that we would be back in, in my lifetime), and what you have shared about the attitude towards growing for personal use, I have been more hesitant.

A shop over here is only allowed to have 500 gram max and they cant 'refill' trough the backdoor as we call it as that would be illegal as it is not regulated.
With all the tourism the shops are forced to do ''so called'' illegal things (constant refill and have more then 500 gram) and thats what hurts our poor poor government....they dont know how much is sold and they dont get a penny

This bs is just because the government knows the shops get a shitload of income they cant track and cant tax... so now they had the idea to stop selling to tourists (but they dont wanna miss the income they do get from the tourism) ORRRRR they wanna regulate the backdoor so shops can refill legally ( and they can track howmuch is sold and tax them for it )

It has nothing to do with the tourism itself, it has nothing to do with the illegal backdoor...its all for the reason they know there is alot $ going around and they want in.
