Recording the reason for death is difficult. It could be said that everyone dies from a cardiac arrest, but was it the car impact, or internal bleeding, or an infection after surgery. All are valid and the decision of the doctor at the time.
Therefore recording the number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test standardises the collection. Not everyone who dies within 28 days will die of C19 but this error will be standardised. It allows a trend to be presented and easily understood.
With the significant increase in deaths when compared to an average of previous years, what else could it be related to?
JMO.
