    Default Timers and modern LEDs

    Hi guys,

I know with powerful and potentially dangerous HPS and MH lights we should use heavy duty timers to ensure saftey, but what about with modern LED Samsung DIY strips, say under 100w? Do these and drivers still need to be on heavy duty timers?
Plus, while we're on the subject, can PC fans, tube heaters and the such be put on normal cheap timers and still uphold safety?

Forgot to say I have seen a two pack of cheap timers that I'd buy and use for the various components if safe to do so

    Cheers

To be sure check the specification data for the timer. For instance, my Pifco TMR1009 can handle 3120W. In theory I could run 31x 100W (12.92 amps)LEDs from the Pifco. HPS are different in that they need a surge to get them going, so if I tried to run 5 x600W from the 1 timer, 3000W total, my house fuse would probably trip. Hence the use of contactors which are designed to absorb the surge, similar to the surge protectors we use on other things, TV's, computers etc. As a comparison most kettles are 3000W.

Led drivers have significant inrush. 40 to 70 amps for 1-2 milliseconds.
