I haven´t used HPS for seedlings. I am using 600W dual spectrum (dimmable) ... how far away and what wattage is good to use if seedlings start to appear and when is good to use max. wattage?

Im using dual hps 600w from the start.
I started with around 1m from the seedling, now when they are 8 weeks old they are around 60cm away from the light.
What bulb are you using? I use lumii black.
I started with 600w straight, 2 weeks ago I dimmed to 400w but noticed that 600w is better so just go with 600w.
Make sure you got a fan for air circulation.

whatever the height put the back of your arm at same level as the plant for a minute if its uncomfortable for you it will be same for seedling
ive noticed when i drop a new hps or MH bulb in they are a lot hotter than when its been used for a while ...or its just me

You'll fry seedlings using the back of the hand test. I wouldn't do that.
