Cannabis Seed Germination – Best Ways To Successfully Make Your Marijuana Seeds Sprout

Germinating cannabis seeds is one of the first tasks growers have to face when beginning their journey to growing their own weed. Popping marijuana seeds is a seemingly easy task, but seeds are extremely sensitive, and there’s a lot that can go wrong. That’s why we’ve compiled all the information we could find about how to germinate cannabis seeds in this article.

First Things First: Do You Have Good Seeds?
Every great plant starts as a solid seed. Bad seeds won’t germinate regardless of what a grower does. As a result, you’ll need to find good seeds to set yourself up for success. Do some research and find a premium seed bank. Order top-shelf seeds – they’re worth it. Once you get your seeds, you can visibly appraise their viability. Look for large, teardrop-shaped seeds that are gray, brown, or black with tiger stripes across them. Check out our post on seed quality to learn more.

What Conditions Do Cannabis Seeds Need To Germinate?
It takes more than good seeds to grow a plant, though. Several variables affect cannabis seed germination, including moisture, temperature and development time. This is a defense mechanism – seeds will wait to sprout until they find an environment that mimics spring conditions in nature.

    Proper Moisture
Germinating cannabis seeds requires you to keep them in water. Make sure they’re moist, but don’t soak them. If they stay too wet for too long without any air, they may be ruined. However, once the taproot (the seed’s first root) sprouts, you’ll need to keep the seed extremely wet. If the taproot sprouts and the seed then dries out, it will inevitably die. Seeds are extremely fragile when the taproot first sprouts – keep them wet!

    Peace And Quiet
Seeds, once in the right conditions, need to spend some time alone before they can germinate. Without peace and quiet to develop, seeds will struggle to germinate. It can be difficult to give them the time they need – after all, you’re going to want to check on them frequently! However, you’ll end up with a better plant if you give your seed some time alone in a dark and moist environment to germinate.

    Correct Temperature
Temperature also plays a huge role in sprouting. The ideal cannabis seed germination temperature lies somewhere between 70 and 80 °F (21 to 27°C). If you don’t keep your cannabis seeds within this temperature range, it doesn’t matter how long you wait for them to germinate – they never will.

    Methods For Germinating Cannabis Seeds
There are several different techniques available to growers who want to pop seeds. We’ve included two common methods here: germinating with peat pellets and utilizing wet paper towels.

    Using Peat Pellets
Germinating cannabis seeds in peat pellets is a safe and reliable way to sprout your plants. As seedlings, your plants are extremely vulnerable to infections and other damage. In fact, even touching seedlings with your fingers can damage them because of the oils on your skin. Peat pellets are made of compressed peat moss, a type of plant that has a slightly acidic pH that cannabis seeds love. Peat moss also doesn’t have much nutritional content itself, so you’ll be able to dial in your seedling’s nutrients to your own specifications.

    Benefits Of Peat Pellet
Peat pellets offer a cleaner, safer alternative to germinating your seeds using wet paper towels. With peat pellets, you won’t have to physically touch your seeds once they germinate. Instead, you can just transplant your rooted pellet directly into a larger pot. This means that you won’t need to expose your seedlings to the potentially harmful oils and microbes on your skin.

    The Method
First, soak your peat pellets in water for about 10 minutes. You’ll see them swell up to about four or five times their normal thickness. Next, remove the pellets from the water. Using a pencil or some other kind of narrow poker, make a hole in each pellet about half an inch (1.5 centimeters) deep. Then, put a single seed in the hole and cover it. Now you wait – keep your pellets moist during this time. Once your seed takes root, it’ll be ready for a larger container.

    Using Paper Towels
Looking for an old-school trick to sprout your seeds? This is a tried-and-true method that many growers will vouch for. It may not be the best way to germinate cannabis seeds, but cultivators have used this trick for decades thanks to its low cost and ease of execution. Using a wet paper towel to germinate seeds is a fairly simple process. All you’ll need are seeds, paper towels and some water.

    Benefits Of Paper Towels
For newer growers who are unfamiliar with how to sprout cannabis seeds, using wet paper towels offers a few benefits over peat pellets. First, it allows you to play a numbers game. You can place multiple seeds in a wet paper towel and they’ll all germinate at once. That’s in stark contrast to peat pellets, which can only hold one seed each. However, you will need to transfer the germinated seeds from the wet paper towel into another growing medium after they sprout – be careful not to damage them during this process.

    The Method
Wet a paper towel with water and place it between two dinner plates to lock in humidity. You’ll want to make sure that the paper towel stays wet, just like you would with a peat pellet. Check on them periodically. Cannabis seed germination time can range from a single day for fresh seeds to a week or more for older ones. After they sprout a taproot, you can remove it from the paper towel and place the germinating cannabis seeds in soil or another medium.

    Planting Seedlings
After your seeds sprout, you’ll need to plant them in a bigger container. If you’re unsure how to plant germinated cannabis seeds, don’t worry – we’ve got your back. First, always treat newly-sprouted plants extremely gently. Fill a pot with dirt or another medium. Dig a small hole about knuckle-deep in the medium and place the germinated plant in, root down. Then, fill in any space left around the sprouted plant with extra dirt. Don’t pack the dirt down too tightly – looser dirt allows roots to grow more easily.

    Final Thoughts
These aren’t the only ways that you can pop seeds, but germinating seeds in a pellet or a paper towel are some of the most common, proven and easy ways. Regardless of which technique you decide to use, germinating a plant is one of the most meticulous tasks a grower can face. However, with the right technique, you can make sure your seeds pop every time!
