    Default Water PH question

    Hi

So I got a digital ph tester, calibrated it with the powder that it came with. Every thing seemed fine, water out the tap was 6.5.

Anyway, tested it again today and when I tested the water its all over the place. Fresh out the tap 6.5, warm (wish) water that had been boiled was reading 8.5.

Is this normal? Does water thats been filed have a different ph? My plants are only 1 inch out the ground at the mo so I've got time to sort a new one if thats the issue.

Thought I'd see what you guys think.

    Cheers

I guess depending upon how long you boil the water you could concentrate the minerals and cause increased alkalinity. I'm not sure how you could trust those powders for calibrating them? After all you have to add them to water and unless you have distilled water thats free of everything I don't think the powder would be accurate. It's also best to calibrate at two points I like pH seven and four when I do my calibration, I use liquids that I buy for that.

Cheers Jingo, I was thinking that about the powder. I did find an older thread from 2011 by Alchemist Of Green which says "****Do not adjust pH of water or feed solutions for soil or compost.****"

I would tend to agree with the statement that you don't need to pH when growing in soil. You do need to know your background EC and pH to understand what kind of nutrients you need how often to repot.

Would that be the same if your PH out of the tap was 8?

I'd be checking out the EC of water that has that high pH it might not be suitable for growing. At least not if you intend to use nutrients.

EC is between 0.6 and 0.7
