Question Answered: Best way to collect run off from tray

    Hola,

Im just wondering if anyone has any good techniques to collect/empty the run off tray after you feed your plants, also when should you empty it?

I'm just thinking it's a little awkward moving the plants and and the tray to empty it anywhere convinent

I've read online that if you leave it, it collects bacteria & nobody wants that. Also I want to collect the run off nicely so I can test it

    Appreciate the feedback guys

I’m growing in 12Litre Rhizo fabric pots and I have mine on little racks (like what you get in a microwave) and I have the plants sat on one of them each inside a 26Litre rubber bucket, air still in and around the pots and I empty mine the next time I feed them, I take the plant out have a check over them for any nastys while out and trim what, as and when, and I pour the (at the moment) x3 buckets of run off in one bucket and empty it, I feed 12pints for 12Litre pots, the roots grow out and air prune and I’ve not had a problem as yet (touch wood)

They do them smaller and other places obviously do them it’s just to show you mate:

Ive used turkey basters up till now lol... only 2 plants but still a pain in the ass in coco. My space is elevated so ive finally got round to getting a tray and the bits needed to add a draining hose to it. I have some wire mesh cut to size so the plants stay off the tray base. I'll wedge a ruler or something under the tray so the water collects near the hose. Just waiting on the hose bits to arrive in the post.

I considered a wet vac but im a cheapo with no space anyway. Tried an oil syringe but it leaked immediately. Syphons (electric or otherwise) didnt work as the trays were too shallow.

I drain the trays as soon as i can. Helps keep my humidity down.

    My current method.

1 tray between 2 buckets. Elevated slightly at the far end so it runs to the front of the tent. Then just suck it out with the syringe

NO SELL, NO SMELL, NO TELL!!!

Thank you all for your input guys.

It's good to see what other people are doing.

I've just ordered the suction syringe so hopefully this works out nicely.

I'm growing 3 plants in 3 a, 1m x 40-50cm lot so the 3 plants will be sat next to eachother.

So would you say to get some mesh or something to keep it from sitting directly in the tray and to then drain it a day after the feed? Or should you drain it straight away?

Also, people say about moving their plants, I plan on using a scrog net so once they've been out through the first net you can't really move them then can you?

Thanks again for the feedback guys

You can get creative yeah and raise the pots in many ways. If you are scrogging you want something that can just stay in place.
I built something from an old tent and dog crate for a previous grow

Standing water in the tent is something I don't like if I can help it. So I give my hempys 10 minutes to finish draining after a feed while I have a cuppa then suck it straight out
