Default Question for hard water growers

So for years now every grow ends up with this kind of thing (all soil) Click image for larger version.

ID:	385732 . I've asked about it on quite a few forums & tried lots of things except RO water which is a not an option for me. My water is shit it's full of calcium & hardly any mag, scummy sh*t all over the sink etc - ec 0.5 PH 8. That's the problem, too much calcium building up & locking other stuff out, that's the conclusion i've come to after battling it for years & having lots of conversations about it. Majority of the time I ask about it there are quite a few people with similar EC & PH levels who pop up that never have any problems, this must be because of the excessive calcium I have & they don't, I cant think why else it would be the case ?!

Was wondering if anyone around here recognises this specific problem & what you did to mitigate ? I think the soil type will help quite a lot but i've been through a few types already (plant magic, playgron lightmix, B&Q verve & some others I cant remember). Weirdly the only thing that appears to help a bit is magnecal which goes against a lot of advice as I have hard water already, none the less though it does help. Maybe my water shows as hard but the minerals just aren't available to the plant somehow, I dunno.

So yeah was hopefully looking for people with this specific problem & what soil you use ? Nutrient wise am going to try growers ark hard water base nutrients next, I tried PM old timers & also their hard water range which didn't help, also a load of others that I cant remember of the top of my head which didn't help.

    cheers for any info

I use hard water for about 10 years or so, ph of 7.2, but couldn't tell anything wrong. I doug me A new well, and now my ph is 5.8 and seems the same to me. JMT.

My well water comes out of the ground 1000 parts per million on a 700 scale which makes it about 1.5 EC and the pH is about 7.2. I grew for a couple years before using reverse osmosis water which is what I do these days.

The way that I succeeded growing with hard water is I did three repotts, I would start in a one gallon and as soon as that ran out of nutrients I'd switch to a three gallon and when that ran out of nutrients I'd switch to a five gallon and then I would take it straight into flower. I generally wouldn't feed until I got to about the last three maybe four weeks of flower, because I was simply putting in too many minerals in my water already. That worked pretty well for me as long as I had a good super soil and I used Fox farm ocean Forest for a while, until I found a hydro shop a hundred miles from me that had the soil custom mixed for our particular area. It was absolutely great soil, I really liked it.

I think you could probably grow organically without too much trouble if you did several repotts. Or you could simply avoid using fertilizers altogether.

I'll link the thread but I think it's bad ph. Have a look through this https://www.thctalk.com/cannabis-for...t-leaf-problem

Summary, make sure ph is checked and corrected before water or feed. I had the issue with plain waterings so made sure ph was about 6.5 when watering. Used a new nute and that makes it go proper high so have to ph it on feed too now.

You could always try diluting your tap water with a low calcium bottled water?

    Also, doesn’t vinegar dissolve calcium?

Do you run into problems the whole grow or more during flower?
I think Jingo is on to something with the ph. Where I grew before we had hard water (7.9 ph) and like you I tried different soils.
i have to say FFOF really seemed to make a big difference. I always ph my water down before watering and check the ph again after adding nutes and adjust if needed.
Also even tho my water was hard I still had to add cal/mag.

Cheers MC, not really, when I switched to oldtimers I read that people weren't watering to runoff with it (if thats what you mean) as it wasn't necessary with organics. Before though when I was on chemical ferts I did try flushing the soil through a few times during the grow but it didn't seem to help. Do I need to get loads of runoff then with oldtimer ?

That's some hard as nails water. Cheers yeah maybe I should try some sort of supersoil I wonder if it would help things along better ? I only grow autos so potting up loads of times isn't really an option.
