    Default Question About Watering

    Hi everyone,

I am midway through flowering and I am growing in 15 litre pots and i have been watering when soil is quite dry and then making sure there is drain into the saucers but then removing any excess drain that remains after a few minutes so saucers are left dry.

I have a friend who tells me I should be watering every day regardless and ensuring drain into the saucers and he says then leave the excess in the saucers for the plants to absorb. He also suggests that if there's not enough drain, to add some nute solution to the saucer for the roots to drink up.

Which method do you think is best? I don't want to restrict my plant's access to water and nutes at this critical time but I also don't want to drown my roots.

    Thanks,
    D

Your mate isn't confused with coco?
Every day (maybe twice) with coco
Soil... when pots are light depending on your environment it could be 2-4 days before needs anymore

If you are in coco then water everyday to run off (15-30%).

If you water daily in soil you will drown it out. Feel the pots weight after watering, then water again when it weighs about half what it does wet.

Either way you don't want the old nutrient and salts that you have just washed out the pot sat getting sucked back up by leaving the plant sat in it. That's a sure fire way to throw your PH out in the root zone and stop the plant eating

To see the effect it can have... Mix up a litre of nutrients and measure the EC. Stick it some where warm and let half the water evaporate to simulate a locked out plant just taking up water...then measure the EC again...then beat ya mate over the head with ya EC stick when ya see how much it has risen!!! you don't want ya roots drinking that or sitting in it.

Thanks for your responses everyone I am growing in 30% coco / 70 % Plagron Allmix compost. I take it that would count as soil so I will proceed with your advice for soil. I thought it was bad advice but am new to soil and I didn't want to be that guy that ignores when a friend is trying to help. But I will ignore this gem of wisdom. Thanks again, all.

Can see where your mate is coming from, even 30% seems high enough for me to think about but I'm like 90% compost and the rest perlite and never used the coco
Atb chap, there'll be someone knocking around who's mixed the two together

Oh wow, I will consider increasing the frequency then. Presumably letting them stand in the runoff is still a negative though?

Yes you definitely do not want your plants reabsorbing the runoff.
