Glad to see such a balanced conversation going on. I remember getting into so many scraps in jest over this only a couple of years back. How things have changed

I have read that a lot of guys hang the drivers outside the tents because of the heat from them, would keeping the drivers inside the tent help with that?
Winter is coming here and it can get colder than -40 outside so my heating is gonna be on 24/7 for the next 6 months most likely.

I think it all depends on the LEDs, some run hotter than others, same with the drivers I suspect?....if I place my driver inside the tent, it doesn't make all that much difference (1c increase at max...if that).
I like to have my house temperature around 20-21c, no more than that, but I still need the two 80w tubes to reach 25c-26c inside the tent (with passive air being 20-21c).
Not just leds, almost everything new for cultivation has had teething problems.
Lumatek digital hps ballasts were hyped up and the company downplayed the problem of radio interference. Imagine having the cable guy call and tell you that something in your home was wiping out the tv signal for the block. Ouch. Early digital hps ballasts weren't that reliable either.
Many reports of males and hermies from feminised seeds in the early days.
At first, autos were only for those desperately short on growing time and/or height.
hps lamps have quietly improved too. 15+ years ago, it took 50w psf to get about the same bud density as 37.5w psf gives now. The old hps lamps ran so hot that air cooled hoods were almost vital.
Where the 600w magnetic ballast hps will always have a place imo is for the new grower with 10 to 16 square foot of growing space. Cheap, reliable and not that far behind wrt yield. When the hps does get upgraded, it becomes a spare light, just in case.
All these lights will give off roughly same number of photons give or take. Its just some take more watts.
The ones which use more watts have the highest total cost over the life time of the light.
If you have enough money upfront, you will get excellent return on your investment. If you buy cheaper technology, you will pay much more in the long term.
Like anything in life.
