I thought I'd share this as I feel like someone might find this useful
A little while ago, whilst bored and recovering I decided to carry out a test and fine tune my seed germination technique...
The reason for this test was because I was curious as to why my girls kept having their seed shells stuck around them, which was always a pain to remove and I wanted to see if I could avoid this entirely.
I felt like the depth I was planting the seed had a lot to do with it, plus I wanted to experiment and fine tune my germination technique without wasting expensive seeds, so I purchased these organic hemp seeds at £5.54 for a 250g bag.. perfect!
SO..I took some hemp seeds (btw I also eat them after being roasted in the oven with a smidgen of salt, very good for us as it happens..I recommend!) and planted some at the following depths in soil @ 24c - 26c and roughly 70-75% humidity ;
5mm
10mm
15mm
They all germinated except for a few at the 15mm mark..
The ones at 5mm all had their shells stuck around them!
The only ones that all successfully germinated AND came out without their shells on were the 10mm depth planted seeds...I was well chuffed.
Feel free to carry out these tests yourselves to see what works for you and your chosen medium.
If any of you have problems germinating seeds in general, don't waste any more of your expensive seeds!..just purchase some organic hemp seeds and carry out some tests, try different temps, planting depths and humidity
In conclusion, I will personally be planting all my seeds at a depth of 10mm @ 24c-26c and 70% humidity.
Remember though..we have a strict rule of 10 plants total as far as the forum is concerned
