Thread: Seed germinating problems - Shell getting stuck?

  1. Thumbs up Seed germinating problems - Shell getting stuck?

I thought I'd share this as I feel like someone might find this useful

A little while ago, whilst bored and recovering I decided to carry out a test and fine tune my seed germination technique...

The reason for this test was because I was curious as to why my girls kept having their seed shells stuck around them, which was always a pain to remove and I wanted to see if I could avoid this entirely.

I felt like the depth I was planting the seed had a lot to do with it, plus I wanted to experiment and fine tune my germination technique without wasting expensive seeds, so I purchased these organic hemp seeds at £5.54 for a 250g bag.. perfect!

    SO..I took some hemp seeds (btw I also eat them after being roasted in the oven with a smidgen of salt, very good for us as it happens..I recommend!) and planted some at the following depths in soil @ 24c - 26c and roughly 70-75% humidity ;

    5mm
    10mm
    15mm

They all germinated except for a few at the 15mm mark..

The ones at 5mm all had their shells stuck around them!

The only ones that all successfully germinated AND came out without their shells on were the 10mm depth planted seeds...I was well chuffed.

Feel free to carry out these tests yourselves to see what works for you and your chosen medium.

If any of you have problems germinating seeds in general, don't waste any more of your expensive seeds!..just purchase some organic hemp seeds and carry out some tests, try different temps, planting depths and humidity

In conclusion, I will personally be planting all my seeds at a depth of 10mm @ 24c-26c and 70% humidity.

Remember though..we have a strict rule of 10 plants total as far as the forum is concerned

I don't think it really matters that much. If you just leave the seedling alone, it will shuck the seed cover as it grows. JMO

I've known quite a few members lose some seeds where the shell got stuck or had a poorly start, it would avoid that and a slow start completely hotshot

Well I never lost A seed, only if it didn't pop up from the soil. All mine grew out of it or I like you say, pick at it sometimes, cause it does make one crazy. haha

Perfect.. to be honest when I was planting at 10mm I was thinking nahhh, seems a little deep lol, but they were perfectly fine..

Make sure to pat it down gently after replacing the medium and I used one of those mini screwdrivers, measured it to 10mm (placed a marker), made the hole, dropped the seed in and covered

The key is the medium places enough resistance to help the the shell just come off as the seedling moves upwards.

i read planting the opposite of what people usually say could help with stuck shells. as the taproot comes up and down, it will force the shell horizonally and do sort of a sit-up through the medium, that will bring it off better than straight up it said.

That reminds me oJAE, I took no notice of how I planted the seeds..took no care on which way up at all, and they all germinated except for a few at 15mm.
