Default Answered: Background water & EC question...

    Hellllloooo

I've been using mineral water for my plants which has a background of 0.1 EC & mixing my nutes to total strength of 1.5 EC.

The intention was to filter my tap water which I tried but it still had an EC of 0.5 (same a pre-filtering).

I take it if I now use a background EC of 0.5 I weaken my nutrient strength to 1.0 (as opposed to the 1.4 I was using) so I still get the same total EC strength of 1.5?

    Cheers,

Yep that's right bud, it will be less of what you give (0.4 less) replaced by whatever is in your tapwater than how you had it previously."

An Ec of 1.5 with a background of 0.5 would be too high anyway..

A background of 0.5 is a good base level IMO I would work with that...

    Thank you

High in general or high because of the background? (As in is it fine to total 1.5 if my background is 0.1, but with a background of 0.5 I should target a lower total value - Say 1.2 or whatever)?

Kind of stuck with it TBH. My plan was to use the 3 stage pre-filter from an RO unit (but without the membrane so no hours of sending water to waste) in the hope that after running my tap water through a sediment filter (removes heavy metals) carbon block filter & granular carbon filter (which I believe remove chlorine & chloramine among other things) I'd have a better quality background to start with.

However after flooding my kitchen I gave up

    Thanks

What EC should I be shooting for with a background of 0.5 please?

    Cheers.

All depends on your nutrient range and more importantly your plants. My background is around 0.5 and I feed my seedlings 1.3EC total from day 1. Some people don't get that high ever.

Start by adding 0.3EC worth of nutrients (0.8 total) and see what your plants say. If the new growth starts to turn light increase to 0.9 next feed, start to go dark drop to 0.7 next feed. If they stay healthy green hold at that level till they turn light or dark

    Hi mate,

Thinking about it they are a little dark...

I was feeding a total of 1.5 with a background of 0.1 & they’ve been on a background of 0.5 for a few days with slightly less nutes to maintain the total of 1.5. I’ll back the nutes off as suggested, see how they respond & adjust accordingly.

    Thanks for the detailed response
