Default 600w hps questions.. SAFETY FIRST

Basically I'm just wondering how people go about using a 600w hps over here in the UK? I've seen a few online saying it's fine to just plug into the wall and not worry but I'm just wondering about a contactor or whatever and if it is necessary? I've used hps when I was younger and didn't think too much about it but now I have my own place safety is absolutely paramount. I only plan on running a 600w hps, 5inch extractor fan, and a couple clip on fans or an oscillating fan

I use a Plug & Grow timer, but if you aren't using a timer then plugging straight to the wall should be fine

I had this issue as we as a novice. I bought a heavy duty timer which is made for up to 600w lights. Cost me a tenner from amazon.

If you’re worried you can buy exploding fire extinguishers that cover the room in a foam to put out a fire.

I’m running a 600hps screwed to the wall and have done for a good few years, all is good for me

You do have to remember some ballasts can get hot, so make sure to put them either onto brickwork or sat on something that won’t catch fire such as a bit of slab, brick ect.

A resin sealed magnetic hps ballast is extremely reliable. Some get concerned because it gets hot. It is designed to get hot. The worst it can do is leave a scorch mark on your carpet. Having it on some form of a trivet prevents that.

There is no physical danger or fire risk to using a regular timer without a contactor but it can mess up your grow.

hid lamps are greedy for current and will take all that they can get. They are virtually a short circuit. A magnetic ballast has a coil of wire to limit the current a lamp draws. However, a coil of wire only limits ac current and the first half cycle of the mains is, in effect, dc current. iow, when the light turns on, there is a virtual short circuit for about 1/100 of a second. This can create a spark across the contacts of the timer and weld them together. If that happens, your light will stay on 24/0.

One of the most sickening feelings when flowering photos is to realise that your light has been running 24/0 for an unknown number of days. Using a contactor prevents that.

Most grow shops offer an all in one timer/contactor that will handle up to 600w. Well built and less than £15.
