Advice please?

Hi I recently set up a small grow cupboard for two or three plants. I originally made the cupboard about 600mm x 600mm x1100mm but soon realized it would be better being built inside the built in wardrobe of my spare room -which is dedicated to my hobbies. So a week later I re-built a slightly smaller version which is about 500mm x 500mm x 1000mm. The mini 'room' was lined 100% all over with a reflective material I found online. I put an Air Admittance valve on the top and put a venting pipe out of the back of the unit and through the gable wall of the house. The 100mm pipe goes up outside like a soil and vent pipe (Stench pipe) up clear of window height. It also houses a fan set to draw the air out of the grow room and up out of the stench pipe. I have also fitted a 100mm desktop fan to crerate a constant breeze on the plants.

Initially the young seedlings set off growing beautifully but when transferred to the new unit they soon began to display yellow marks and then began to wilt. I had potted them using a product named canna terra and before putting it into the pots I worked some blood, fish, and bone into the compost. As soon as they had a couple of pairs of leaves I put them into their final pots which are either 17mm or 200mm pots. Because they had grown swiftly into stubby plants with multiple leaves I began watering with either Baby Bio or Tommorite, hoping these would be appropriate feeds.

I have tried researching on the web. And have come to the conclusion that only two factors could be the problem. I think either the early dose of feed has killed my plants or, more likely I think, the grow light is too powerful, or rather too close, to the plants?

I'm a bit deflated as I have effectively wasted about five weeks, and of course the seeds, however I am still determined to get things right so I'd really appreciate any advice folks.

I think you probably hit the nail on the head, too much light and too much feed. So you're 5 weeks are hardly a waste I think I wasted about 9 months on my first grow.

A couple of other points that may also help pinpoint my problems are that the grow light is the one below and at the moment is about 500mm above the plants. Also the temperature in the unit seems to stay between 22c and 24c.

I don't know that light, but even the cheapies you don't really want to get that close unless you're in late flower.

Ok thanks Jingo. I have ordered some more seeds and will either buy another light or extend the height of the unit. I would prefer to do the latter if possible. Is there any way I can quantify the light I have and determine the correct distance between light and plants? I've just noticed that the images might not show as my post count has to be over ten. Sorry if that is the case.

You pics are showing m8, I don’t really know shit even though I’m on my fifth grow lol but when I first tried growing the first few times my problem was watering too much and too often and yours looks like they did whilst looking on my phone anyway, how much water are u giving them and most led manufacturers say 24 inches for seedlings and 18-24 inch for vegging I think, ur best bet would be to google ur light and see if u can find some recommended heights, good luck with the next ones m8

Type of nutes and dosages

I dont think its light issue. plants show other symptoms usually when light is too bright or if theres not enough of it....

Thanks. Funnily enough I did originally suspect myself of over watering as the yellowing of the dying leaves was soft and limp rather than crispy as unwatered plants tend to be. It raises another couple of potential problems too I think, as the warmth of the light and the constant breeze from ther fan in what is quite a small environment tends to dry the top part of the compost to bone dry but the weight of the pots suggests that this compost holds the water way too long as well. I did wonder if the top part of the compost drying out as rapidly as it does might mean that although the pot is retaining moisture the actual plant is starved of it?

Quite an advanced but stunted plant. Is she flowering??

Canna terra has plenty of nutrients ( set at EC 1.3 iirc ) to get a plant into flower easily.

I think the plants are cooking and stunting in the strong feeds you have added as well as lacking good wet to dry watering cycle.

Cheers for the advice. I have tried letting one of the three plants remain very dry as a comparison but it still died.

The temperature recently has been 24c inside the room while the light is on (18hrs) and 18c when it has been off for an hour or two. I have no means of measuring the humidity. I'm a little lost regarding the light spec. It is advertised as 3000watts but from the reading I have done I think the true output can be quite different? I also read that the true wattage has to appoerar in the ad somewhere, and the listing on Ebay read 1,000 watts (Assuming that was the info you required) The light is about 500mm from the plants. The compost is named Canna Terra and is made from coconut husks. The nutes (Nutrients?) I'm not sure of dosages but I put perhaps 1 part BF&B to twenty parts compost. I also watered one with a diluted solution of Tommorite and one with Baby Bio in roughly those proportions too.

Canna Terra is soil as far as i know...
Your light probably draws 300 not 1000. Back in the blurple led days, manufacturers would state the "hid equivalent" number and not the actual draw. Complete BS lol.

Anyhow, id go with those who understand soil, as i grow in coco.
