I get much better penetration with my 300 watt lumigrow pro 325. I get about a 3x3 ft footprint. And I can get dense buds more than 24 inches down, I never got more than about 18 in down with my 600s.

My lights are professional greenhouse lights that are 8 years old I don't know what the technology is like today, I would imagine you can do much better.

You don't just save on electricity you save on replacing bulbs, I used to replace mine about every 6 months to keep the yield up. I've been using these LEDs for about 7 years. I replaced a couple fans on one of the units that I bought used. That's the only expense I've had.

Can't say much on the vs front, but under a 150w invisible sun I always get tight nugs.

If you can do online shipping, and can wait a bit, any lm301b/h board will do as good as anything, for $150 per 240/250 watts board.

A 240w (quantum) board has about 288 diodes
You could have some deep and far reds, for more accurate flowering phase spectrum.

    Theyre about 60 x 20cm in size and will cover about 60 x 60cm space (2 x 2 ft) at 45-50cm away.

You also have those new 80w led bars they come as a fixture of 4 / 6 / 8 bars. Very efficient and very good light spread. Cost a bit more though.

Well it's not just about the savings you'll make on electricity, you also gotta factor in how much more bud you'll get out of your grow.
LEDs are the sensible choice, there's a reason they don't sell any other type of lightbulbs anymore, the LEDs are just that much more efficient and older tech makes very little sense.
With that said, if I were to start a grow today I would probably go with HPS simply because it would be cheaper to start out with.
Then again once I factor in costs of larger fans and filters due to the heat, I'm not so sure HPS would make a lot of sense to be honest.

    Thats very true.
For a winter grow, i might be going HPS.
Where i live, winters usually 10 to 15 degrees with nights of 7 to 13 id say.. so not that hard to control... But places that gets close to or below zero celsius... Should go for hps.. no doubts. Or some sort of hps+led combo

For a closet or spare room grow, the central heating should take care of winter temps.

My 315w cmh is quoted at ~600 umol/s and the power draw is 320w. What sort of led would beat that on both counts? (To cover 80cm square.)

I wasn't convinced until recently about LED being better than HPS,but I seen some results on here and done some research.
600w HPS was always my light of choice,it now sits on a shelf while I use 2x240w quantum boards samsung LM301B diodes,Meanwell XLG drivers,3500k+660 diodes,I didn't want to spend silly money from a vendor so bought mine direct from Alibaba which cost me $400cnd for 2 shipped express, with a customs charge of $13 which was mostly an admin fee lol.

I have an auto gorilla glue under 1 board and a hempy bucket photo vegging under the other,so far the photo seems to love the LED,and the auto GG has dense, sticky, stinky, crystal coated buds.I will know in a few weeks how good a yield I get from 1 plant, once the auto is done I'm gonna 12/12 my photo under both boards,I'm looking forward to seeing how they both do.
You can see my plants in my grow diaries in my sig, that photo hempy was seriously ill after I used insecticidal soap on her,I thought she was done for and was gonna be tossed,1 week under the board and she looks healthier than ever.

Ive just had a 240w qb in a similar space, yielded 300 grams from a mediocre grow. Nitrogen toxicated. An on point grow would yield a good 400 for sure with the same cut..

My first grow and I was going to use a 600w hps, but after the advice from this forum I bought a 480w led. It comes in 2 parts so I've used the 240w light so far, my seedlings are not that anymore, they are big for the timescale, no worries with heat either.

I am growing cbd critical mass and they flourish under led, they are in 15litre fabric pots.
    my tent is 1m x 1m x 1.8m.

i would really recommend led lights, far more manageable heat wise , but like i said, this is my first grow.
